Pirates stay undefeated
The Blue Earth Pirates got in on the ‘Bago Fun Fest action June 18, knocking off two teams to stay undefeated in the regular season.
Enjoying four straight wins since their June 8 matchup with the Waterville Indians was postponed due to inclement weather, the Pirates stayed on the right track in Winnebago, topping the Minnesota Lake Royals, 6-2, before trouncing the Wells Wildcats in a 5-0 decision, Blue Earth’s fifth shutout of the year.
Aaron Wendt, who entered the weekend with an earned run average of 0.81, earned the win on the mound for the Pirates against the Royals. Brandyn Olsen, meanwhile, remained the team’s strikeout king in his own winning outing against the Wildcats. The Blue Earth Area graduate has yet to allow a single run on the season.
The Pirates were next scheduled for a pair of weekend games:?a June 24 showdown with the Jackson Bulls, which is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start on the road, and a 2 p.m. bout with the Morries in Morristown on Sunday, June 26.
Before returning home for a July 1 rematch with the Wildcats in Blue Earth, the Pirates will travel to New Richland to face the Reds at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Another 7:30 p.m. home game on July 6 will precede the 2016 Coors Light Tournament, which Blue Earth is slated to kick off in Shakopee at 6 p.m. two days later.
Coming into their Winnebago weekend, the Pirates were headlined by T.J. Schmidtke, whose .500 batting average and 20 hits ranked atop the team. Behind him, player/manager Lee Hodges led the Pirates with 15 RBIs, and Kane Malo ranked first with 15 runs scored. On the hill, Olsen, Wendt and Hodges each had at least 22 innings of work with ERAs of under 1.78. Olsen’s 36 strikeouts ranked atop the team leaderboard.
