The streak continues.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers could see their own breath Wednesday night, taking the gridiron in Pipestone on a short week after more than two hours on the road.

But neither the long trip from home nor the chill of the air could keep BEA from storming to its fourth straight victory, a 26-21 win that catapults the maroon and gold into postseason play as the No. 4 seed in its section bracket.

The host Arrows had the Bucs’ number in 2015, when they shut out BEA 35-0 on the road to an appearance in the state title game, but the fortunes were reversed Wednesday night, as head coach Randy Kuechenmeister’s squad rebounded from a first-half deficit to outgain and outscore Pipestone.

“We made some great adjustments at half, the kids started doing their assignments and then (were) able to hold the fort,” Kuechenmeister said. “It was just a great team win for our kids. I’m proud of them.”

Wednesday night’s contest began with the makings of a shootout, as BEA and Pipestone traded touchdowns throughout the first two quarters, the Arrows taking a 21-14 lead entering the third.

But a near-flawless performance from Bucs’ senior quarterback Logan Jahnke (13-of-18, 180 yards, 3 TDs), coupled with another big day for his wide receivers and, perhaps most prominently, the defensive side of the ball, swung momentum in BEA’s favor as the game went on.

“It was great,” said Jahnke, who has thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions in his last two starts. “I don’t know what to say. It’s just so exciting.”

An eight-yard strike from Jahnke to wideout Jacob Vaske on a first-quarter red-zone route tied the contest 7-7 after an opening-drive touchdown run by the Arrows, and a nine-yard bullet to the front of the endzone in the second quarter was hauled in by Blake Barnett to knot the game at 14.

Barnett’s second touchdown catch of the night, another nine-yarder, came with 5:08 remaining in the third, helping the Bucs answer a 15-yard score by Pipestone. A botched snap on the extra point let the Arrows retain a narrow lead of 21-20, but a stingy second half by the maroon and gold “D” ultimately paved the way for a go-ahead drive by BEA.

Retaking possession on a fourth-down stop deep in their own territory, the Buccaneers handed the rock back to their offense, adding to their 30:42 time of possession and powering forward with a slew of Jahnke passes and hand-offs, taking the lead for the first time of the night on a 12-yard carry by Zach Buseman.

A two-point try was no good, but BEA held onto its five-point lead for the last 5:46 of the Big South Conference clash, hardly allowing the Arrows to move the ball past the line of scrimmage in the final two quarters.

“My coach says they had like negative-one yards until (a) fake punt,” Jahnke said, pointing to the Bucs’ clean-slate mentality as the team heads to the playoffs. “It’s a new season. We think of it as starting 0-0, starting over.”

Barnett, who took two snaps at quarterback in relief of an injured Jahnke Wednesday night, agreed.

“This win meant a lot for us, (and) we’re ready to move on to the playoffs,” he said. “Hopefully we get a win. You’ve got to believe in yourself, really.”
