Four BEA girls honored with All-BSC recognition

By Staff | Nov 20, 2016

Four Blue Earth Area girls were named All-Big South Conference honorees for their efforts in the Buccaneers’ 2016 season.

Senior Samantha Barslou and junior twin sisters Alissa and Lindsey Norman received All-BSC recognition, while junior Sofie Blair earned honorable mention for the maroon and gold as part of East Division competition.

BEA won seven of 10 conference games in 2016 on the road to Sub-Section semifinals and its best record since 2012, and each of the four honorees were vital components to that success, according to Bucs coach Donna Nawrocki.

Alissa Norman, who eclipsed 1,000 career set assists during the season, finished with 642 (260 in conference matches) as the Bucs’ offensive catalyst. She also tallied 25 blocks and 67 kills to go along with 154 digs.

“Alissa does a great job of leading our offense and mixing it up,” Nawrocki said. “She reads the opponents well to help her teammates have success and has a great attitude and hustle.”

Alissa’s sister, Lindsey, had a team-high 215 kills up front, also logging 107 digs and 73 blocks.

“She’s athletic and a versatile all-around player and she works hard in and out of the season to be a complete player,” Nawrocki said of Lindsey. “She’s got a competitive spirit and is driven to help her team be successful.”

Barslou, whose kills helped lift the Buccaneers past New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the Class AA South Sub-Section quarterfinals, had 168 on the year. She also racked up 182 digs, 25 blocks and 24 ace serves.

“Sam has continually gotten stronger in all aspects of the game over the years,” Nawrocki said. “She always looks for coaching to help bring her game to the next level for her team.”

Blair, meanwhile, topped the century mark in both kills (117) and digs (167) while recording 36 blocks and 32 aces from the serving line.

“She’s quick, athletic and has great court sense,” Nawrocki said of Blair. “Sofie works hard and brings it every day to practice and games, and she’s a determined team player.”
