BEA rebounds with big win after tournament
Once again, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team flexed some muscle and cruised to a big win.
This time it was against the New Ulm Eagles last Thursday night. The Bucs won 57-16 in a match played in Blue Earth.
The Buccaneers had six pins and three Eagle forfeits which accounted for 54 of their 57 points.
BEA began with three pins in a row for an 18-0 start. Davis Sunken get a fall in 5:25 over Jackson Bode at 106 pounds. Max Ehrich added one in 28 seconds at 113 over Carter Brandes and Caden Ochsendorf pinned Cole Ranweiler in 2:36 at 120.
The Eagles came back with three wins in a row to cut the Bucs’ lead to 18-13. Koby Nagel lost by a fall at 126 pounds to Ryan Wacker, Jaxen Klinkner lost a major decision, 10-1, to Sean Howk at 132 and Dalton Nagel lost a 7-2 decision to Hunter Ranweiler at 138.
Cole Klinkner got a win by a forfeit at 145 pounds, while Zach Buseman won by a fall at 2:59 over Lane Miller at 152, and the Bucs lead was up to 30-13.
Roger Ziegler lost a close 5-3 decision at 160 pounds to Tanner Stark, making the score 30-16.
But, that was the last points the Eagles would get in the match. The rest was all Buccaneers.
Both Wyatt Tungland at 170 pounds and Isaac Martinez at 182 won by forfeit.
Jesus Quintero pinned Hunter Landsteiner at 195 pounds in 34 seconds, Jordan Huse won a close 2-1 battle over Noah Linscheid at 220, and Trevor Oppedal closed out the Eagles with a 34-second pin victory over Colby Wenniger.
Next up for the maroon and gold was a trip to Redwood Falls for the River Riot Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 17.
On Thursday of this week, the Bucs will be in a triangular match against Le Sueur-Henderson and New Prague.
Park WolfPack Tourney
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team traveled to the Park High School WolfPack Duals Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 10, and came back home with a fourth-place finish.
The Buccaneers fell to Albert Lea Area 56-10 in round one of the tourney, then defeated Tartan 72-4 in round two, and Park 57-18 in round three, before falling to Wayzata 35-31 in the battle for third place.
Here is a wrap-up of all the action at the Park Duals.
Wayzata 35, BEA 31
Battling into the third place match, the Bucs fought hard but came out just short in a heartbreaking 35-31 loss to the Class AAA Wayzata Trojans.
The match was a back and forth battle all the way.
The Bucs jumped out to a 10-3 early lead. After Davis Sunken lost a close 4-2 decision at 106 pounds to Cael Swenson, Max Ehrich took an 11-3 major decision at 113 over Cole Ciardelli and Caden Ochsendorf pinned Roane Zaragoza in 3:10 at 120.
BEA lost the next three matches allowing Wayzata to gain a 17-10 lead. Koby Nagel lost by a fall to Royce Hogue at 126 pounds, Jaxen Klinkner lost a 19-2 technical fall to Mitchell Hogue at 132 and Dalton Nagel lost a heartbreaker 8-7 decision to Parker Cary at 138.
But, the Bucs bounced back, with three pins in a row. At 145 pounds, Cole Klinkner pinned Tim Gilseth in 17 seconds, Zach Buseman pinned Peter Ojeda at 152 in 1:08, and Roger Ziegler pinned Adam Grassi at 160 in 2:21.
That put BEA up 28-17.
Wayzata came back with two pins of their own. BEA’s Wyatt Tungland lost to Dan Herda (ranked No. 5 in Class AAA at 170 pounds) and Isaac Martinez fell at 182 to Max Pfau and the Trojans were ahead by one, 29-28.
At 195 pounds, BEA’s Jesus Quintero took an 8-6 decision over Calem Eugene for three team points and the Bucs were up 31-29.
Jordan Huse lost a 3-0 decision at 220 pounds to Max Bunning and Wayzata was up 32-31 with one match to go.
BEA’s Trevor Oppedal lost a 7-1 decision at 285 pounds to Bryson Wilkins, ranked No. 8 in State in Class AAA.
That made the final 35-31, Trojans.
BEA 57, Park 18
The Buccaneers cruised past the host team WolfPack from Park in round three of the duals, winning 57-18, with eight pins and three forfeits.
Davis Sunken at 106 pounds, Max Ehrich at 113 and Caden Ochsendorf at 120, all won by forfeit to start things off, and with Koby Nagel pinning Jake Schwartz at 126, the Bucs had a fast 24-0 lead.
Jaxen Klinkner lost 11-8 to Peter Oyebanji at 132 pounds, but Dalton Nagel countered with a 10-3 win over Andrew Diaz at 138 and the score was 27-3.
The Bucs then scored four pins in a row for a commanding 51-3 lead.
Cole Klinkner pinned Dan Ruiz at 145 pounds, Zach Buseman pinned Devin Long at 152, Roger Ziegler pinned Edric Waindim at 160 and Wyatt Tungland pinned Garrett Whitehead at 170.
After BEA’s Isaac Martinez lost by a fall at 182 pounds to Andrew Drigans, Jesus Quintero countered with a pin at 195 of Noah Johnson and BEA led 57-9.
Park took the last two matches when Jordan Huse lost by a fall at 220 pounds to Antonio Davis and Trevor Oppedal lost a 4-0 decision to Robert Marrier at 285, making the final 57-18 Bucs.
BEA 72, Tartan 4
After losing in the first round, the Buccaneers did not have any problem in the second round, smashing the Tartan Titans 72-4.
The Bucs jumped out to an 18-0 lead when Davis Sunken won by forfeit at 106 pounds and Max Ehrich pinned Cody Alvarado at 113 and Caden Ochsendorf pinned Cade Iverson at 120.
Koby Nagel lost a major decision 13-5 at 126 pounds to Nathan Alvarado, but Jaxen Klinkner won a 7-2 decision over Zach Dox to make it 21-4.
The Bucs won the next five matches by falls. Dalton Nagel pinned Eric DeLacy at 138 pounds, Cole Klinkner pinned Cade Magill at 145, Zach Buseman pinned Alexander Dean at 152, Roger Ziegler pinned Dane Iverson at 160 and Wyatt Tungland pinned Jared Schmitz at 170.
Isaac Martinez at 182 pounds and Jesus Quintero at 195 both won by forfeit.
Jordan Huse took a 6-3 decision over Trey Staves at 220 and Trevor Oppedal pinned Brandon Floyd at 285 and the match was over.
Albert Lea Area 54,
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team took on Albert Lea Area in the first round at the Park WolfPack Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 10, and quickly learned why the Tigers are ranked No. 4 in State Class AA rankings.
The Buccaneers lost 57-10 to the Tigers, who have eight of their wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in the Class AA weight classes.
BEA is ranked 12th in Class A. Three Bucs are in the top 10 of their respective weight classes: Cole?Klinkner at 145 pounds, Zach Buseman at 152 and Jared Armon at 220 pounds. Armon is injured and could be out for up to five more weeks.
The only two Buccaneer wrestlers who notched wins were Max Ehrich at 113 pounds, who scored an 11-1 major decision over Joshia Hedensten (ranked No. 7 in Class AA), and Wyatt Tungland at 170 pounds, who pinned Jesse Hernandez in 3:31.
At 106 pounds, BEA’s Davis Sunken lost 6-0 to Caleb Talamantes, Caden Ochsendorf suffered an 18-6 major decision loss to Joe Peterson, and Koby Nagel lost by a pin at 126 pounds to Jake Johnsrud.
Jaxen Klinkner lost by a technical fall (16-0) at 132 pounds to Gavin Ignaszewski, Dalton Nagel lost 6-2 to Tyler Harms at 138 pounds, and Cole Klinkner was pinned at 145 pounds by Brody Nielsen.
Zach Buseman also suffered a loss by a fall to Garrett Aldrich at 152 pounds, as did Roger Ziegler at 160 pounds to Zach Glazier and Isaac Martinez at 182 pounds to Brady Nielsen.
Jesus Quintero lost 10-8 in overtime to Alex Bledsoe at 195 pounds, Jordan Huse lost by a fall at 220 pounds to Tanner Palmer and Trevor Oppedal lost a heartbreaker, 2-0, to Matt Palmer at 285 pounds. Palmer is rated No. 1 in State Class AA.
Lake Mills Triangular
BEA 43, Lake Mills 24
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team traveled to Lake Mills, Iowa, where they won both their two matches in the triangular meet on Thursday, Dec. 8.
The Bucs downed the host squad from Lake Mills 43-24.
Koby Nagel got things started for the Bucs at 126 pounds with a 7-5 decision over Alex Martinson.
At 132 pounds, Jaxen Klinkner took an 8-6 win over Ashten Love. Dalton Nagel scored a 15-4 major decision over Cael Boehmer.
Cole Klinkner won with a fall at 1:13 over Maverick Schmidt at 145 pounds, and Zach Buseman also pinned his man, Zach Johnson, in 3:00 at 152 pounds. BEA was ahead 22-0.
Roger Ziegler lost by a fall at 160 pounds to Michael Olsen, but Wyatt Tungland gained five points for BEA when he scored a 19-3 technical fall over Cole Bergo at 170 pounds, making the score 27-6.
Isaac Martinez lost by a fall at 182 pounds to Gabe Irons, as did Jordan Huse at 195, losing to Slade Sifuentes. The score was closer at 27-18.
Jesus Quintero got BEA back on track with a pin at 4:43 in his 220-pound match against Max Johnson.
Next Trevor Oppedal took a major 8-0 decision over Brett Tyler at 285.
Davis Sunken fell 12-6 at 106 pounds to Caiden Jones and Max Ehrich lost a close one, 8-7, to Tyler Helgeson at 113 pounds. Bucs led 37-24.
Caden Ochsendorf capped off the match with a pin at 5:31 in his 120-pound match, over Kyle Beery making the final tally 43-24.
BEA 40, Maple River 24
The Bucs scored a 40-24 victory over Maple River in their other match down in Lake Mills.
This time it was Max Ehrich who started the Buccaneers off with a 9-1 major decision over Trevor Pearson at 113 pounds. Caden Ochsendorf also had a major decision, 10-0, at 120 pounds over Reise Hanson.
When Koby Nagel won by forfeit at 126 pounds, the Bucs had jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
But the next 10 matches would find the Bucs and Eagles trading wins.
Buccaneer Jaxen Klinkner lost 5-2 at 132 pounds to Dillion Schmidt, BEA’s Dalton Nagel won 7-3 over Wyatt Simon at 138 pounds, Buc Cole Klinkner fell 5-3 to Lincoln Arndt in a battle of State-ranked wrestlers, Klinkner sixth at 145 pounds and Arndt sixth at 138 pounds.
That made the score 17-6 in favor of BEA.
Zach Buseman scored a 9-1 major decision over Nathan Moore at 152 pounds and Roger Ziegler was pinned by Jared Moore at 160, making the score 21-12.
Wyatt Tungland score a major decision, 12-4, over Dustyn Schmidt at 170 pounds and Isaac Martinez was pinned by the Eagles’ Noah Decker at 182 and the score stood at a close 25-18.
Jesus Quintero countered with a quick 59-second pin of Logan Ziegler at 195 pounds, but BEA’s Jordan Huse lost by a fall at 220 and the score was at 31-24.
The Bucs closed out the match with a 3-0 win at 285 pounds with Trevor Oppedal prevailing over Connor Thorn, and Davis Sunken scoring a win by pinning Ethan Evenson at 106 pounds, making the final tally 40-24 in the Bucs’ favor.
