BEA steals win in St. Peter

Blue Earth Area forward Caelan Sanders, No. 20, drives to the basket in the Buccaneers’ game against Belle Plaine earlier in the season. Sanders, a freshman, had eight points in BEA’s 59-52 win over St. Peter Tuesday.

Juniors Blake Barnett and Jacob Vaske combined to score 37 points against St. Peter Tuesday, and the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys scooted past the Saints, 59-52, to capture their second win in three games on the basketball court.

Five days after falling at the hands of state-ranked Jackson County Central, the maroon and gold got back in a groove on the road, logging 11 steals and staying just as active on the offensive side of the ball to get back in the win column.

With eighth-grade standout Austin Thielfoldt still carving out time in the lineup, the Bucs glided to a 31-26 halftime lead over the Saints before Vaske’s big performance in the paint the forward added to his growing list of double-digit rebound totals with 12 boards helped power the team to a 28-26 second-half advantage.

Thielfoldt, who made his debut in BEA’s 72-68 win over United South Central at the start of the Bucs’ 2016 Holiday Basketball Tournament, hit one of the team’s three shots beyond the arc and connected on all three of his foul shots, while Vaske finished with 18 points against St. Peter.

Barnett, meanwhile, led the Bucs with 19 points, one of his best performances since a 32-point showing in BEA’s season-opening win. The junior also had five assists and came down with five rebounds.

Freshman forward Caelan Sanders, a regular in the Bucs’ lineup for much of the season, also got in on the action in BEA’s eight-point “W,” sinking a three, scoring eight and notching four defensive rebounds. Seniors Collin Bell and Chris Sanders also got on the board for BEA.

One step closer to .500 despite a 1-4 start to the year, the Buccaneers were next slated to return home on Friday, Jan. 6, for a showdown with Saint James Area.

On Jan. 10, meanwhile, the Buc boys are scheduled to rematch the Jackson County Central Huskies on the road at 7:15 p.m.
