Girls third, boys fourth, at Mankato

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Blue Earth Area cross country team headed to Mankato East High School for their second meet of the season.

And, compared to their first meet, the Buccaneers have already improved quite a bit with the girls cross country team placing third with 76 points, and the boys placing fourth with 108 points.

For the Buc girls, Belle Plaine placed first with 15 points while Mankato East snagged second with 73 points. While BEA had 76 points for third, Springfield was close from taking that position from the Bucs with their 77 points.

Kaitlin Johnson was on point at her second meet of the season, earning sixth place and crushing the second loop of the run and surging into the top 10 in her first cross country 5K with a time of 23:22.

Girls varsity-5000 meters: Melissa Hagedorn (24:19), Callie Stevermer (24:27), Emma Germain (28:18), Gabby Weerts (28:18), Arianna Nagel (28:19), Amanda Jacobson (32:52).

Girls JH-2500 meters: Elizabeth Jacobson (13:57), Elle Wilkerson (18:49).

Boys Results:

The BEA boys placed fourth at this meet with 108 points, just shy of a third place victory, but Springfield was able to use their team tally of 104 points to beat the Bucs out for third. Belle Plaine placed second with 56 points and Mankato East took advantage of their home turf to win first place with 34 team points.

Grant Strukel is a powerhouse for the BEA boys team. He finished his 5000 run with a total time of 18 minutes, earning him first place in individuals at the meet.

“Grant blistered the first loop with 8:37 and cruised during the second loop with a time of 9:23. Yet another victory on the East course,” said head coach Tom Plocker.

Boys JH-2400 meters: Alex Dikken (12:22), Shane Levenhagen (12:39), Carson Strukel (13:58).

The Bucs have their next meet on Thursday, Sept. 7 for the Tri-City United invite at the Montgomery Golf Course. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
