Bucs break even at triangular

By Staff | Dec 24, 2017

Dominic Whitlow works for nearfall points for the Blue Earth Area wrestling team. BEA was defeated soundly by New Prague, but battled back to win the second match of their triangular meet with Le Sueur-Henderson.

Win one, lose one.

That was the story when the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team hosted a triangular meet with New Prague and Le Sueur-Henderson last Tuesday evening at Pemberton Auditorium.

The Bucs lost to the New Prague Trojans, 40-20, but then bounced back and won big, 78-6, over the Giants of Le Sueur-Henderson.

In the first match against New Prague, BEA had its struggles to get on the scoreboard.

The Trojans are in the honorable list in Class 3A, while the Bucs are honorable mention on the Class 1A list.

Trailing 7-0 after two matches, the Bucs got on the board with a 9-5 hard-fought win by Cooper Ochsendorf over Jacob Vaughan at 120 pounds.

The Trojans peeled off five straight wins after that, including a forfeit by the Buccaneers at 152 pounds.

That set up the match of the night at 160 pounds, with BEA’s Zach Buseman, ranked sixth in state at 170 pounds in Class 1A, and New Prague’s Gaige Giles, ranked fourth in state at 160 pounds in Class 3A.

It was a close battle all the way, but Buseman prevailed with a 4-2 win.

One of BEA’s other victories came at 195 pounds when Jordan Huse pinned Connor Scharf at 3:38. The Trojans’ Tyler Montagne, ranked second in state at 195 in Class 3A, did not wrestle.

The match ended with the Bucs’ Trevor Oppedal winning by a forfeit at 285 pounds.

It was a different story against the Giants of LSH.

Every match was decided by either a pin, an injury default or a forfeit, for both teams meaning each team made six team points at a time.

At 106 pounds, Caleb Beeler won by a fall at 1:50 over Jordan Grinde. Davis Sunken took 14 seconds to pin Tyler Miller at 113, and Cooper Ochsendorf pinned James Loewe in 54 seconds at 120.

BEA’s Jack Frundt suffered a loss by a fall to Jorge Hernandez at 126, for the Giants only points. Hernandez is ranked sixth in state in Class A.

Koby Nagel won by a fall at 132 pounds over Ethan Genelin at 1:59. Adam Schavey won by forfeit at 138.

At 145 pounds, Jaxen Klinkner pinned Wil Medina at 4:54. At 152, Cole Warmka won by a forfeit.

Zach Buseman pinned Rylee Christian-Frederickson in just 14 seconds at 160 pounds, and Akeira Morrow defeated Isais Sanchez due to an injury default 13 seconds into the 170 pound match.

Dominic Whitlow at 182 pounds and Jordan Huse at 195 pounds both won by forfeit.

Isaac Martinez pinned Noe Sanchez in 43 seconds at 220 pounds, and Trevor Oppedal pinned Alan Eotvos at 285 in 15 seconds to end the match.

The Buccaneers’ next match is not until Friday, Jan. 5, when they will be hosting the Fairmont Cardinals.
