Oppedal signs with Gophers
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, Trevor Oppedal made things official when he signed on the dotted line. The Blue Earth Area senior football standout will take his gridiron talents to the University of Minnesota this fall.
The future Big 10 offensive lineman capped off a stellar high school football career by paving the way for a dominant Buccaneers rushing attack in 2017.
Oppedal, a key component to a successful 7-5 campaign with the Bucs, led an offensive line that racked up 335 rushing yards against Windom, 305 rushing yards versus St. James, and 271 yards on the ground against Martin County West this past year.
With a smash-mouth style of offense, combined with a stingy defense, Oppedal and the Bucs were able to capture a Section 2AA title and make an appearance in the state championship tournament this past season. For his extraordinary efforts in the trenches, Oppedal was selected to play in the 45th annual Minnesota Football Showcase, a high school all-star game which took place on Dec. 9.
In the all-star game, Oppedal helped lead the South in a 28-14 victory over the North. His key block late in the fouth quarter allowed the South to score the go-ahead touchdown with four minutes remaining.
Moving forward, Oppedal says his best quality is his ability to work with others. A consummate team player, the six-foot-seven senior is looking forward to the next chapter in his football journey.
“It feels great, I’m excited to work with my teammates and coaches,” Oppedal said. “I’m really looking forward to making things happen with the Gophers.”
Oppedal looks to join a Minnesota Golden Gophers program which struggled to a 5-7 finish in 2017. Nonetheless, he is a firm believer the team’s 37 year-old head coach, P.J. Fleck, has the squad moving in the right direction.
“I like his enthusiasm and his dedication,” Oppedal said of Fleck. “What he promises is exciting. I like the vision of the program and I’m excited to help them produce that.”
