BEA notches two wins in triangular

By Staff | Jan 21, 2018

Blue Earth Area senior Zach Buseman outmanuevers an opponent earlier in the season.

It doesn’t get any closer than this.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling traveled to St. Peter last Tuesday night to compete in a triangular with the host Saints and the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/ Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Grizzlies.

And while BEA easily handled WEM-JWP, winning by a score of 57-13, they had to hang on to a one-point victory, 31-30, over St. Peter.

The Bucs got on the scoreboard first against the Saints, when Caleb Beeler defeated Hunter McCann by a score of 6-4 at 106 pounds.

St. Peter countered with a win at 113 pounds when Davis Sunken lost a close, hard-fought 3-2 battle to Noah Hunt, and the score was tied at 3-3.

The Buccaneers gave up a forfeit at 120 pounds, but then had Max Ehrich win by a fall over Nathan Fogal at 126 and the match was tied at 9-9.

Koby Nagel lost 9-7 to Michael Connor at 132 pounds, and Joe Schavey fell 7-2 to Matthew Pettis at 138, and the Saints took a 15-9 lead.

BEA came right back with a win at 145 pounds when Jaxen Klinkner took a 6-2 win over Aaron Hunt, and Cole Warmka scored a 17-7 major decision over Hayden Kurth at 152.

That brought the Bucs back in the lead at 16-15. They followed it up with a 7-1 win by Zach Buseman over Wareke Gillette at 160. Bucs led 19-15.

The Saints roared back with a win by a fall at 170 pounds when Akeira Morrow lost to Sage Loredo-Hollon. That meant BEA now was behind 21-19.

The Bucs’ Dominic Whitlow won by a forfeit at 182 pounds, and Jordan Huse pinned Jaden Neubauer at 195, giving the maroon and gold a 10 point lead at 31-21.

They would need every one of those points as Isaac Martinez was pinned by Hayden Thole at 220 pounds and Trevor Oppedal lost a 5-3 decision at 225, making the final score 31-30.

The Bucs’ other match of the night was nowhere near as exciting as the one versus the Saints.

The Bucs rolled out to a 36-0 lead before the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard.

Caleb Beeler took a 15-2 major decision over Dylan Samlaska at 106 pounds, Jack Frundt won by injury default over Kurtis Crosby at 113, Davis Sunken won by forfeit at 120, Max Ehrich took a 20-11 major decision over Tucker Rients at 126, Koby Nagel also got a major, 14-3, win over Ethan Rider at 132, and Joe Schavey and Jaxen Klinkner both won by forfeit, at 138 and 145 respectively.

BEA’s Cole Warmka lost by an 18-2 technical fall to Class AA No. 10 ranked Braydon Johnson at 152 pounds and Zach Buseman lost a close 3-0 battle to Adam Rientz at 160. That put the score at 36-8.

Akeira Morrow won by a fall over Jaxson James at 170 pounds, while Dominic Whitlow defeated Jaden Taylor 9-7 at 182.

BEA’s Jordan Huse lost by a technical fall to Class AA No. 2 ranked Will Storch at 195 pounds, putting the match at 45-13.

The Bucs closed it out with two pins, Isaac Martinez over Donald Carlson at 220 pounds, and Trevor Oppedal over Brady Ruschmeyer at 285, to make the final 57-13.

This week the Bucs will host the St. James Saints on Thursday.
