Buccaneer tennis shut out twice
For the second day in a row the Blue Earth Area boys tennis team played in a match, and for the secondtime lost by a score of 7-0.
But, on Tuesday, April 24, the Bucs had a lot more close matches against the Worthington Trojans than they had the previous day against Luverne.
With the weather just 40 degrees, cold and windy on the Worthington courts, the Bucs put up a pretty good battle.
Jack Frundt took on Blaine Doeden at No. 1 singles and lost by scores of 6-2, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Parker Kienitz returned to take on Sullivan Merrigan, falling 6-1, 6-0.
It was eighth grader Vern Johnson playing hard against senior Po Kwar Tau, but losing 6-3, 6-4. Fellow eighth grader Nick Frundt also played against a senior, Kyle Janssen, and lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Buccaneers Jonathan Hill and Marcos Gonzalez teamed up at No. 1 doubles and lost to Kipton Jensen and Cade Lindner, 6-0, 6-0. It was Jacob Olson and Jack Barke for the Bucs against Max Langerud and Ryan Newman at No. 2 doubles, with the BEA duo falling 6-3, 6-0.
The closest match of the day came at No. 3 doubles where James Greer and Calvin Farrow took on the Trojan duo of Bobby Souwankheim and Anwar Farra. After a hard-fought battle, the Bucs lost a close 7-5, 6-4 match.
Luverne 7, BEA 0
The Blue Earth Area boys tennis team finally played their first match of the season last Monday night on their home courts in Blue Earth.
Well, technically, the Bucs had already played one match in Albert Lea. However, their first scheduled meet of the year was one at home against the Luverne Cardinals back on Tuesday, April 10.
That match was postponed due to inclement weather conditions, and the Bucs and Cards finally made up that match last Monday.
BEA came out on the short end of the stick, however, as Luverne went back home with a 7-0 sweep of the hometown team.
Jack Frundt took the No. 1 singles spot and had the best match of the afternoon for the maroon and gold. The BEA sophomore lost to senior Mark Robinson by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, eighth grader Nick Frundt lost to senior Cade Ver Steeg 6-0, 6-0. It was eighth grader Vern Johnson falling 6-2, 6-0 to Matt Jellen, a junior, at No. 3 singles.
And, at No. 4 singles, Buccaneer freshman Jacob Olson lost 6-2, 6-1 to junior Luke Janchow.
Jonathan Hill, sophomore, and Marcos Gonzalez, freshman, lost 6-1, 6-0, to sophomore Cole Stoltenberg and senior Ethan Thorson, at No. 1 doubles.
Jack Barke, sophomore, and James Greer, freshman, teamed up at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-0, 6-1, to Matt Sehr and Graham Cunningham, a couple of sophomores.
Another Buc sophomore/freshman duo, Gannon Haase and Calvin Farrow, lost 6-0, 6-0, to two sophomores, Carson Ehde and Jordan Winter at the No. 3 doubles spot.
After putting up with a couple of weeks of snow and cold, last Monday afternoon it was 64 degrees and sunny for the match, the first of only two home matches on the schedule this season.
