Bucs win and lose against Saints
The St. Peter Saints defeated the host Blue Earth Area Buccaneers last Thursday in a three game sweep, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-23, and 25-14.
The much taller Saints team controlled play at the net, limiting the Buccaneers ability to score points on a consistent basis.
Although the home team scored the first point in the opening game, the Saints quickly struck back to take the lead and pull away from the maroon and gold. Hannah Johnson’s kill brought the Buccaneers within one point of the Saints, trailing 3-2. That was as close as Blue Earth Area would get. St. Peter reeled off 10 consecutive points to take a 12-2 lead and never looked back on their way to the 25-8 victory.
St. Peter got out of the gate fast in the second game cruising to a 5-0 lead before BEA could tally their first point.
Trailing 16-5, BEA managed to string together four points in a row to cut the St. Peter lead to 16-9. The Saints fought back and thwarted any further attempt by BEA to close the gap, on their way to the 25-13 win.
The Buccaneers found some success early in game three, battling the Saints to a tie at five points apiece. BEA was unable to sustain their success and gradually the Saints built their lead to 21-9 on the strength of scoring seven straight points.
St. Peter would close out the game and the match, winning by a final score of 25-14.
Maddie Armon led the team in set assists with eight. Hannah Johnson and Alyssa Ripley led the team in kills with six and three respectively. Ripley was also credited with two ace blocks.
Adrianna Granillo paced the team with five digs. Granillo was also 7 of 8 at the service line, scoring four points. Gabby Haaland scored three points on 5 of 6 serving.
The loss dropped the Bucs record to 2-9 and they are 1-4 in the conference.
Blue Earth Area will play host to New Ulm next Tuesday and travel to Fairmont next Thursday.
Results of those matches will appear in next week’s addition of the Faribault County Register. It took five full games, but in the end, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer volleyball team notched their second win of the season and their first conference victory this year.
The Bucs downed the St. James Saints 3-2 in volleyball action last Tuesday night in St. James.
After winning the first two games with close 25-20, 25-21, scores, BEA lost the next two 25-13, 25-21.
That set up the fifth and deciding game to see who would win the match. BEA took a 15-6 win in that game and took home the victory.
It put their season record at 2-8, and 1-3 in the Big South Conference.
