Bucs 2-2 at Invite
The Blue Earth Area wrestling team traveled to Cottage Grove to participate in the Park Wolfpack Duals on Saturday, Dec. 8. The Bucs were the only Class A school in the tournament, which was made up of six Class AAA schools and one Class AA school in addition to BEA.
Each team is placed in a four-team pool and the format is round robin, meaning you wrestle each team in your pool. Your record from your own pool competition determines which team you will wrestle from the other pool in the placement round.
BEA opened the day with a 46-21 loss to Hastings. The Bucs then defeated Park 41-31 and Eagan 38-28 to come out of pool play with a 2-1 record.
The Bucs were matched against the Hutchinson Tigers in a battle for third place. It was the Tigers who came out victorious by a score of 48-24.
Hastings 46, BEA 21
Since this was a tournament, all 14 weight brackets were wrestled. Hastings took the early lead when Carson Sturtz lost a major decision at 106 pounds.
Back to back pins by Ty Peterson at 113 pounds and Davis Sunken at 120 pounds coupled with Caleb Beeler’s win by decision at 126 pounds put the Bucs out front 15-4.
Jacob Beeler suffered a pin at 132 pounds. Jaxen Klinkner at 138 pounds and Max Ehrich at 145 won their matches by decision leaving the Bucs in front 21-10.
The Tigers then went on a run, winning the final seven matches to earn the 46-21 victory.
BEA 41, Park 32
Park took their only lead of the match when Carson Sturtz lost an 11-6 decision at 106 pounds. Ty Peterson scored a sudden victory overtime decision at 113 pounds to even the team score at 3-3.
Davis Sunken and Caleb Beeler both pinned their opponents to give BEA a 15-3 lead. Jacob Beeler earned a 15-0 technical fall at the 132-pound match. Jaxen Klinkner then scored a fall in 1:12 to put the Bucs on top 26-3.
Max Ehrich and Koby Nagel each suffered third period pins as Park narrowed the gap to 11 points, trailing BEA 26-15.
Kean Hicks received a forfeit for the Bucs at 160 pounds. The Bucs’ Logan Johnson then lost by a 15-0 technical fall making the score 32-21.
The Bucs put the match out of reach with Dominic Whitlow’s pin at 182 pounds and Akeira Morrow’s 10-3 decision victory at 195 pounds.
Eric Anderson and Nick Lawrence were both defeated by pins but the Buccaneers still claimed the 41-32 victory.
BEA 38, Eagan 28
Carson Sturtz and Ty Peterson scored first period pins for BEA and Davis Sunken received a forfeit giving the Bucs a quick 18-0 lead. Caleb Beeler added a major decision before Eagan scored their first points with a pin over Jacob Beeler. Eagan added to their score when Jaxen Klinkner was defeated by a 12-2 major decision.
Max Ehrich stopped Eagan’s scoring streak with a 6-4 decision at 145 pounds; Koby Nagel added three more team points with his 7-3 decision at 152 pounds. The team score was 28-10 in favor of the Bucs.
Three straight losses by the Bucs allowed Eagan to cut the BEA lead to six points. Kean Hicks suffered a third period fall while Logan Johnson and Dominic Whitlow lost decisions, cutting the Bucs’ lead to 28-22.
Akeira Morrow earned an 11-3 major decision at 195 pounds and Eric Anderson received a forfeit to lock up the match for the Buccaneers. The match ended with Nick Lawrence of the Bucs losing by a first period pin.
Hutchinson 48, BEA 24
Both Hutchinson and BEA came out of pool play with identical 2-1 records setting up their battle for third place.
The Tigers scored the first points of the match with the Tigers’ Trenton Card gaining a fall over Carson Sturtz in 1:28 at the 106-pound match. Ty Peterson, at 113 pounds, evened the score for the Bucs with a pin over Grant Pierce at the 3:33 mark.
Davis Sunken received a forfeit at 120 pounds to give the Bucs a 12-6 lead. The Tigers tied the match at 12-12 when Tristan Lang pinned Caleb Beeler at 126 pounds.
Jacob Beeler pocketed a 4-0 decision at 132 pounds. The next match featured Jaxen Klinkner pinning Peyton Jepson with eight seconds left in the 138-pound match giving BEA a 21-12 lead.
The Bucs’ Max Ehrich and Adam Schavey were both pinned at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively.
Koby Nagel lost a 7-2 decision at 160 pounds and Kean Hicks was pinned in the 170-pound match. The Tigers now led 33-21.
The string of wins continued for the Tigers with Dominic Whitlow being the next victim. Whitlow lost a close match by a 7-6 score.
Akeira Morrow finally stopped the Tigers’ streak with a 9-7 win over his Hutchinson opponent. Eric Anderson and Nick Lawrence lost by falls allowing Hutchinson to secure the 48-24 win and third place leaving the Bucs to finish in fourth place.
“We like to wrestle a tough schedule,” BEA coach Randy Wirtjes said. “It does a good job of preparing the team for the post season tournaments.”
Ty Peterson and Davis Sunken both finished the day undefeated with 4-0 records.
Caleb Beeler, Jaxen Klinkner and Akeira Morrow each won three matches while losing one.
Bucs 1-1 at triangular
Blue Earth Area won one and lost one in a triangular wrestling meet hosted by the Bucs on Friday, Dec. 7.
The Bucs fell to the Lake Mills Bulldogs 37-21 in the opening contest of the evening but came back and defeated the Maple River Eagles in their second match.
Four Blue Earth Area wrestlers went undefeated for the evening. Ty Peterson, Davis Sunken, Max Ehrich an Koby Nagel each finished the night with 2-0 records.
Lake Mills 37, BEA 21
Ty Peterson got the maroon and gold off to a good start with a 7-4 decision over Jack Ramaker at 106 pounds. Davis Sunken increased the Buccaneer lead to 9-0 with a second period pin of the Bulldog’s Jimmy Gallardo at 113 pounds.
Caleb Beeler lost a tough 5-4 decision to the Bulldogs’ Tyler Helgeson at 120 pounds. Jacob Beeler, wrestling at 132 pounds, lost by a fall to Kyle Beery. The score stood at BEA 9, Lake Mills 9.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the night courtesy of Caiden Jones’ pin of Jaxen Klinkner at the 5:20 mark in the 138-pound match.
Max Ehrich of the Bucs scored an 8-3 decision over Casey Hanson at 145 pounds. That was followed by Koby Nagel’s 8-7 decision over the Bulldog’s Ashten Love at 152 pounds. This made the score tied at 15-15 after seven matches.
Unfortunately for the Bucs, Lake Mills won four of the final five matches to gain the win.
Elijah Wagner put the Bulldogs in front for good with a first period pin over Kean Hicks in the 160-pound match. Lake Mills increased their lead to 10 points when the Bucs’ Logan Johnson suffered a major decision loss to Zach Wagner at 170 pounds.
Dominic Whitlow, wrestling at 182 pounds, brought the Bucs to within four points of the Bulldogs with a pin of Brayden Lindeman. Lake Mills held the lead 25-21.
Drake Harnish of the Bulldogs sealed the win with his second period pin of Eric Anderson at 220 pounds. The 285-pound match saw Max Johnson of Lake Mills score a first period pin over BEA’s Nick Lawrence.
BEA 34, Maple River 21
Wins by Ty Peterson and Davis Sunken propelled the Buccaneers to an early lead against the Eagles.
Peterson scored an 8-4 decision over Boden Simon at 113 pounds. Sunken scored a 10-0 major decision against Ethan Evenson at 120 pounds to stake BEA to a 7-0 lead.
Trevor Pearson defeated the Bucs’ Caleb Beeler by an 8-6 decision to pull the Eagles to within four points at 7-3.
Jacob Beeler responded with a pin of Cooper Ochsendorf at 3:05 of the 132-pound match to give BEA 13-3 lead.
The Bucs’ Jaxen Klinkner and Max Ehrich were winners by forfeit at 138 and 145 pounds respectively to increase BEA’s lead to 25-3
Koby Nagel’s 5-2 decision over Jared Latusek gave the Buccaneers a 28-3 lead.
Caden Ochsendorf pinned the Bucs’ Kean Hicks at 160 pounds. The Eagles’ Bryan Garlow followed with a third period pin of Logan Johnson to narrow the Buccaneer lead to 13 points at 28-15 with three matches left.
Maple River won the next two matches by decision to make the score 28-21. The Eagles’ Wyatt Simon defeated Dominic Whitlow at 182 pounds by and 11-4 score. Nathan Trio followed with an 8-7 decision over the Bucs’ Eric Anderson to make the score 28-21 in favor of the Bucs.
Nick Lawrence pinned Eston Battles of Maple River at the 4:27 mark to close out the meet and give Blue Earth Area the 34-21 victory.
