Bucs undefeated at Tonka Duals
The Blue Earth Area wrestlers traveled north on Saturday, Feb. 9, to participate in the Tonka Duals held in Minnetonka.
BEA wrestled in four dual meets and ended the day going 4-0 in their final tune-up before tournament action begins.
Seven Buc wrestlers finished the day undefeated; Davis Sunken, Caleb Beeler, Jaxen Klinkner, Max Ehrich, Nick Frank, Luke Mertens and Dominic Whitlow.
BEA 66,
Minneapolis
Washburn 16
The Millers of Minneapolis Washburn were the first opponent for the Bucs. The Maroon and Gold dominated the contest winning by a score of 66-16.
Carson Sturtz of BEA started with a pin at 106 pounds. Ty Peterson lost by a major decision making the score 6-4 in favor of the Bucs.
The Buccaneers then won the next 10 matches.
Davis Sunken, at 120 pounds, and Caleb Beeler, at 126 pounds, won by forfeit. Jacob Beeler at 132 pounds recorded a fall in the first period giving the Bucs a 24-4 lead.
Jaxen Klinkner scored a second period pin at 138 pounds and Max Ehrich needed 1:50 to win by a fall at 145.
Koby Nagel received a forfeit at 152 pounds followed by Logan Johnson’s second period pin at 160 pounds.
Nick Frank received a forfeit in the 170-pound match. Luke Mertens pinned his opponent at 182 pounds with 29 seconds left in the second period to give the Bucs a 60-4 lead.
Dominic Whitlow finished the scoring for the Bucs with a pin with 11 seconds to go in the opening period.
Erik Anderson, at 220 pounds, and Ian Cornelio, at 285, both lost by fall.
BEA 53, Minnetonka 17
In their second match of the day, Blue Earth Area took on the Minnetonka Skippers and cruised to a 53-17 victory.
The Skippers got on the scoreboard first when Carson Sturtz lost by a 17-1 technical fall in the 106-pound match.
Ty Peterson answered with a technical fall at 113 pounds to tie the score at 5-5.
Davis Sunken, at 120 pounds, and Caleb Beeler at 126, both recorded first period falls giving the Bucs a 17-5 lead.
Jacob Beeler scored a 7-2 decision at 132 pounds. Jaxen Klinkner pinned his opponent with six seconds left in the first period in the 138 pound match. Max Ehrich recorded a third period fall at 145 pounds giving BEA a 32-5 lead.
Koby Nagel won by a 14-2 major decision at 152 pounds and Logan Johnson squeezed out a 7-6 decision in the 160-pound match which increased the Buc’s lead to 39-5.
Nick Frank won by a 10-1 major decision at 170 pounds. Dominic Whitlow went down to 182 pounds for this match and responded with a 14-5 major decision putting BEA on top 47-5.
Luke Mertens, who moved up to 195 pounds, trailed 10-3 going into the third period but pinned his opponent to give the Bucs a 53-5 lead.
Erik Anderson lost by a pin at 220 pounds with one minute to go in his match. Ian Cornelio lost by a fall in the second period of his 285-pound match.
BEA 83,
Minneapolis Roosevelt 0
Minneapolis Roosevelt was the Buc’s third opponent for the day and the Buccaneers blanked the Teddies 83-0.
Carson Sturtz won by fall at 106 pounds. Ty Peterson received a forfeit at 113 pounds followed by Davis Sunken, who received a forfeit at 120 pounds, to take an 18-0 lead.
Caleb Beeler at 126 pounds, Jacob Beeler at 132, Jaxen Klinkner at 138, Max Ehrich at 145 and Koby Nagel at 152 all recorded first period pins.
Logan Johnson won the 160-pound match due to an injury forfeit. Nick Frank scored a first period pin to put BEA out front 60-0.
Dominic Whitlow received a forfeit at 182 pounds and Luke Mertens won by a 21-2 technical fall at 195 pounds.
Erik Anderson won by a first period pin and Ian Cornelio receive a forfeit for the final points of the contest.
BEA 41,
Mankato West 19
In their final contest of the day, Blue Earth Area faced off against the Mankato West Scarlets and came away with a 41-19 victory.
Carson Sturtz won at 106 pounds by a 3-0 decision to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead. Ty Peterson scored another three points for the Bucs by winning the 113-pound match 4-2.
Davis Sunken pinned his opponent at 120 pounds with two seconds left in the first period. Caleb Beeler won by a 9-0 major decision in the 126-pound match.
Jacob Beeler had the tough draw of the day. He lost to the class AA No. 2-ranked Charlie Pickell at 132 pounds by a first period fall. The score was now 16-6 in favor of the Bucs.
Jaxen Klinkner scored a 10-2 major decision at 138 pounds and Max Ehrich recorded a second period fall at 145 to put the Bucs on top 26-6.
Koby Nagel dropped a 16-7 major decision at 152 pounds and Logan Johnson was pinned in the second period at 160 pounds. The Bucs lead was now 26-16.
Nick Frank, at 170 pounds, won a 3-2 decision. Luke Mertens received a forfeit at 182 pounds. This gave the Bucs a 19 point lead at 35-16. With only three matches left, the Bucs were now assured of victory.
Dominic Whitlow, at 195 pounds, won a 10-3 decision. Erik Anderson lost a 7-3 decision in the 220-pound match.
Ian Cornelio gained his second win of the day with a 4-1 decision in the 285-pound match.
