Pirates bats heat up against Spiders

The Blue Earth Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak with a 16-4 thrashing of the Cleveland Spiders on Wednesday night, June 26.

Blue Earth feasted on the Spiders pitching staff and took control of the game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Kaylan Legred started things off when he was hit by a pitch to reach first base. TJ Schmidtke followed with a single before Brandyn Olsen drew a walk. Lee Hodges then doubled to drive in two runs. It was the first of six consecutive hits for the Pirates as Aaron Wendt, Logan Jahnke, Zach Schonrock, TJ Stallman and Legred each followed with singles. When the damage was done, the Pirates had a 7-0 lead after one inning.

Blue Earth scored two runs in the second inning and four in the third inning before adding single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Garrett Anderson started the game and pitched four shutout innings to get the victory. Schonrock pitched the fifth inning and started the sixth before Jahnke took over in the sixth and finished the game.

The Pirates 16 runs came on 17 hits. They committed one error during the game. The Spiders scored four runs on five hits and were charged with four errors.

Morris 13, Blue Earth 0

The Pirates suffered their second straight shutout when they lost to the Morris Eagles in their opening game of the Miller Lite Tournament held in Green Isle on Saturday, June 22.

Brandyn Olsen was the offensive bright spot for the Pirates. Olsen had two hits, a single and a double, and a walk. Logan Jahnke pitched the complete game and gave up nine hits. The Pirates defense committed four errors.

Blue Earth 3

The Green Isle Irish staged a ninth inning rally to come away with a 4-3 win over the Pirates in their second game of the Miller Lite Tournament last Saturday, June 22.

Blue Earth led 3-2 going into the ninth inning before the Irish scored twice to claim the victory.

Lee Hodges took the loss, giving up nine hits and two walks. The Pirates were charged with one error during the game.

Aaron Wendt and Brandyn Olsen each had two hits. One of Wendt’s hits was a home run.

The Pirates were scheduled to travel to Jackson on Friday, June 28 to take on the Jackson Bulls. The Morristown Morries hosted the Pirates on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. Blue Earth then went to Janesville on Sunday, June 30 for a 2 p.m. game against the Janesville Jays. Results of those games will be in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
