Bleess pitches team to another win
The Winnebago/Blue Earth Legion baseball team met the St. James Legion club for the third time this year at Veterans Field in Blue Earth on June 27. The squads came into the game having split their two previous games.
In what turned out to be a pitcher’s dual, it was W/BE who came out on top with a 2-1 win.
“They have a good squad,” coach Paul Nienaber said. “All three games were close.”
Hunter Bleess was on the mound for the home team and pitched all seven innings to get credit for the win. He scattered five hits, walked two, struck out 10 and stranded seven St. James runners while giving up one unearned run.
W/BE scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. They finished with six hits and left five runners stranded.
“We were able to string our hits together, while?Hunter scattered their hits,” Nienaber explained.
Caelan Sanders drew a base-on-balls to start the home half of the first inning. With Joe Schavey at the plate, Sanders stole second base to move into scoring position. Schavey capitalized on the situation by lining a hard single to the outfield to bring Sanders home with the first run of the game.
Schavey was tagged out as he tried to take second on the throw to the plate. St. James recorded their second out on a ground out and it looked like they might get out of the inning without any further damage.
A double by Anders Fering over the head of the centerfielder followed by a line drive single by Brayden Barnett resulted in another run and a 2-0 lead for W/BE after one inning.
The score remained the same until the top of the fourth inning when St. James was able to score their only run of the game.
W/BE did have some other opportunities but failed to add to their run total.
“We ran ourselves out of some innings,” Nienaber commented. “We made some mental mistakes which we will correct.”
Fering added a single to go along with his double to lead the team with two hits. Schavey, Bleess, Barnett and Gavin Storbeck also had hits for W/BE. Schavey and Barnett each had one RBI.
The W/BE Legion baseball team returns to action with a doubleheader at Truman on Monday, July 8, beginning at 6 p.m.
W/Be will be hosting sub-district games July 11-14. Sub-state games will be at Luverne July 18-20, and July 26-27.
