Tough loss for Pirates
The Blue Earth Pirates were upset by Wells in the opening round of amateur league baseball playoff action on Sunday night, July 28.
Wells, behind the pitching of Sam Zeebro, shutout the Pirates 1-0 in a game which was delayed because of rain in the Blue Earth area.
The Pirates managed only four hits off Zebro. They had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not come through with the timely hit to get on the scoreboard.
Garrett Anderson pitched well for Blue Earth. Wells scored their lone run in the sixth inning. The lead-off batter singled and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A walk put runners on first and second. An overthrow by the catcher, in an attempt to pick the runner off of second base, allowed the runner at second base to take third. The runner then scored on an infield groundout to the second baseman to give Wells the only run they would need.
The opening round loss makes the road to the state playoffs tough for the Pirates. They must now win five games in a row to earn a trip to state.
Their next game was on Saturday, Aug. 3, when they played host to Gaylord. Results of that game will be in next week’s edition of the Faribault County Register.
