BEA girls end up sixth

The Blue Earth Area girls tennis team won one match and lost two, on their way to a sixth place finish in the Class A State Tennis Tournament last week.

The Buccaneers ran into one of the best teams in the state Rochester Lourdes for their first match last Tuesday, and lost 6-1.

The loss dropped the Bucs down into the consolation bracket where they faced off against New London-Spicer. The Maroon and Gold regrouped and took a big 5-2 victory over NL-S. The win put the Buccaneers into the Consolation Championship game where they took on the Minnewaska Area team in a battle for fifth place.

The BEA girls played hard but fell in a very close 4-3 match which was played last Wednesday afternoon.

Two of the Buccaneer tennis team members are continuing their state play. Ta Armstrong and Arika Howard began their doubles team play last Thursday in the State Class A Individual Tennis Tournament.

Starting with the most recent match, here is a recap of the Buccaneer team results.

Minnewaska Area 4,


Having fought their way into the Class A Consolation Championship match, the Bucs came as close to winning as can be done without actually gaining the victory.

And, one of the matches, at No. 4 singles, could easily have gone either way and swung the match for the Bucs.

Starting at No. 1 singles, Ta Armstrong was defeated by Danielle Thorfinnson by a score of 6-2, 6-0.

But, Macie Stevermer gained a big 6-3, 6-4, win at No. 2 singles over Alissa Thorfinnson, and Arika Howard took a 6-1, 6-0, win over Karra Hanson at No. 3 singles.

Marissa Benz had a long, hard-fought battle at No. 4 singles. She lost the first set 7-6 (7), but bounced back to take a 6-2 win in the second set. The third set was a battle but Benz fell 10-8, losing the match to Addy Randt.

McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard lost 6-2, 6-4, to Greta Reichmann and Annika Randt at No. 1 doubles, and Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris lost a 6-3, 6-1, match at No. 2 doubles.

The Buc duo of Addison Armstrong and Kiley Rosenau teamed up to take a 6-4, 6-2, win at No. 3 doubles.

The close loss put the Bucs into sixth place for the tournament.

New London-Spicer 2

After having lost their first match at State earlier in the day, the Buccaneers bounced back with a solid win over New London-Spicer the next day.

Ta Armstrong got things going for the Buccaneers with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Ava Hanson at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles, it was Macie Stevermer losing 6-4, 6-2, to Izzy Schmiesing at No. 2 singles.

Arika Howard won a big 6-3, 6-0, victory at No. 3 singles over Kamryn Quenemoen. Marissa Benz was involved in another long match at No. 4 singles, but came out with a 7-6 (3), 6-2, win over Mya Mayhew.

Buccaneers McKenna Dutton and Britt Howard teamed up for a 6-4, 6-1, win over Ruby Parsons and Morgan Rolighed at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, Cali Beyer and Lyndsey Borris fell 6-4, 7-6 (6), to Megan Warner and Ashley Templer.

BEA’s Addison Armstrong and Kiley Rosenau got a big 6-3, 6-4, win at No. 3 doubles over Taylor Barber and Shannon Monson.

Rochester Lourdes 6, BEA 1

The Buccaneers had a rough start at the State Tournament, taking on one of the toughest teams there, Rochester Lourdes

Ta Armstrong took a 6-0, 6-2, loss to the No. 2 ranked player in the state, Clare Palen, at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles, Macie Stevermer fell to Jane Spalding, and at No. 3 singles, Arika Howard suffered her first loss of the season to Ryann Winter, 6-1, 6-2.

Marissa Benz also lost at No. 4 singles to Caroline Daly.

BEA’s only win in the match came at No. 1 doubles, with Britt Howard and McKenna Dutton winning a long, hard-fought match over Sydney Elliott and Elyse Palen, 7-6 (5), 4-6,10-8.

At No. 2 doubles, Lyndsey Borris and Cali Beyer lost to Karin Hayford and Melissa Stocker, and at No. 3 doubles, Addison Armstrong and Kiley Rosenau lost 7-5, 6-3, to Hannah Roth and Annabel Boughey.
