Grant Strukel competed in the State Class A Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2. The senior joined an elite group of Blue Earth Area male cross country runners by becoming the third BEA male to have run in four state meets. Strukel also earned Academic All-State honors for the third consecutive year.

Blue Earth Area’s Grant Strukel participated in the State Class A Championship for cross country on Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Strukel placed 56th with a time of 17:03 in his final high school cross country meet.

According to his coach, Tom Plocker, Strukel zoomed out of his starting position and worked his way to 5:11 at the mile mark in 64th place, then by the second mile mark, Strukel was clocking a time of 10:49 and in 58th place. With 175 runners competing, Strukel pushed forward and got to the finish with an improvement of two places within the last mile.

“Though not the All-State top-25 that he was seeking, Grant was the eighth individual from his Section 2A to finish,” says Plocker. “He also placed in the top-third of the State competitors for the fourth consecutive year.”

In addition, Strukel became the third BEA boy in Buccaneer cross country history to run in four state meets. Other alumni to do so include Dan Ristau and Daniel Murray.

“Perhaps most importantly,” adds Plocker, “he earned Academic All-State honors for the third consecutive year. A huge congrats on a colossal career to him.”
