Bucs finish 13th at Red River Riot

Ian Cornelio works to keep his Fairmont-Martin County West opponent down during BEA’s recent dual meet against the Red Bulls. The Bucs wrestled in the Red River Riot in Redwood Falls on Dec. 20-21.

The Blue Earth Area Wrestling team traveled to Redwood Falls on Dec. 20-21 to compete in the two-day Redwood River Riot Invitational Tournament.

The Bucs compiled 77 points to finish 13th in the 36-team field. Last year BEA finished in ninth place with 87 points.

Fairmont- Martin County West (FMCW) scored 237.5 points to win the tournament for the third consecutive year.

Four BEA wrestlers finished in the top eight in their weight brackets. Davis Sunken brought home a third place medal, Jaxen Klinkner finished fourth, Nick Frank took seventh and Caleb Beeler was eighth.

“I thought we wrestled pretty well,” BEA coach Randy Wirtjes said. “We left some points out on the mat but there were some real good wrestlers there.”

Sunken wrestled in the 126-pound weight bracket and began the tournament with a bye before pinning Jayden Torgeson of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove in 1:20.

In the quarterfinals Sunken won an 11-5 decision over Minneapolis South wrestler Daniel Avre.

Next, Sunken lost by a fall with 32 seconds left in the match to Jaxson Rohman of FMCW.

He bounced back with an 11-0 major decision over Jake Wagner of Canby to move into the third place match.

Sunken gained his third place medal with a 7-2 win over Hsa Law Eh from Marshall.

Jaxen Klinkner opened the tournament with a first-period pin over Kadin Kuehl of Fulda-Murray County Central at 145 pounds.

Klinkner was defeated 9-6 by Mason Irlbeck of Wabasso-Red Rock Central but came back to win five straight decisions to reach the third place match.

Klinkner defeated Parker Viessman of Canby, Luke Hoefer of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (KMS) and Dylan Joyce of Sartell-Saint Stephen to set up a rematch against Irlbeck.

This time Klinkner gained a 3-1 decision over the Wabasso-Red Rock Central wrestler.

Klinkner then defeated Micah Hamson of United South Central 3-1 to move into the third place match where he lost a 7-3 decision to Class A No. 3-ranked Lincoln Carpenter of Sibley-East.

Nick Frank brought home a seventh-place medal at 182 pounds.

Frank had a first-round bye and then lost a 3-0 decision to Will O’Brien of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield.

Frank then defeated Alex Full of Canby 7-2 and Preston Nelson of Adrian Area 4-0.

Next he had a rematch with O’Brien and lost a close 2-1 decision.

In the match for seventh place Frank defeated Max Olson of FMCW 7-2.

The final Buc wrestler to place was Caleb Beeler at 138 pounds.

Beeler received a first-round bye and then won an 8-7 decision over Ryan Borris of Alexandria Area.

Beeler then dropped a 13-3 major decision to Will Magaard of KMS. Next, he won a 5-3 sudden victory decision over Andrew Wollack of Sauk Rapids-Rice.

Next, Connor Roth of Marshall pinned Beeler in the second period. Caleb Whipps also scored a second period pin over Beeler in the seventh place match which left Beeler in eighth place.

“It is good for the guys to have some tough matches here,” Wirtjes commented. “It will help us at the end of the year.”
