Bucs pin their way to semifinals

Davis Sunken, pictured above, was one of 10 BEA wrestlers to record a pin in the team’s quarterfinal contest against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. The Bucs advanced to the semifinal round on Saturday, Feb. 15, where they faced the Medford Tigers, the No. 4-seeded team in the section.

The No. 1-seeded Blue Earth Area Buccaneers wrestling squad advanced in the Class A Section 2 Team Wrestling Tournament on Thursday night, Feb. 13, with an 82-0 victory over the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Buccaneers.

BEA was scheduled to wrestle the No. 4-seeded Medford Tigers in the semifinals in St. Clair on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Tigers defeated the No. 5-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers 53-9 to earn their spot in the semifinals.

The other semifinal match will feature No. 2-seeded Maple River against the No. 3-seeded, defending section champion, Kenyon-Wanamingo.

The winners of the two semifinal contests will then wrestle for the section championship and a trip to the State Tournament.

BEA needed less than 40 minutes to punch their ticket to the next round of section wrestling.

WEM/JWP, the No. 9-seed, had defeated the No. 8-seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights 36-34 earlier in the evening to earn a shot at BEA.

The Maroon and Gold went undefeated in all 14 matches and won 10 by pins, two by forfeits, one by an injury default and one by a major decision.

“Our guys were ready to go tonight,” BEA head coach Randy Wirtjes said. “They know it is a new season. Now they need to be ready to go on Saturday.”

Caleb Langager scored a first period takedown and a second period reversal before pinning Carson Petry in 2:38 in the 106-pound match to give the Bucs a 6-0 lead.

BEA’s Ty Peterson needed 52 seconds to earn a fall over Gavin Krause at 113 pounds and put the Bucs on top 12-0.

Davis Sunken added six more team points for the hometown Bucs with a first period pin over Lucas Morsching in 48 seconds at 120 pounds.

In the 126-pound match, Jacob Beeler pinned Patrick Adams in 22 seconds to give BEA a 24-0 lead.

Caleb Beeler increased the hometown team’s lead to 30-0 with a 32 second fall over Jeramia Hale in the 132-pound match.

BEA’s 138-pounder, Jaxen Klinkner, scored a first-period takedown against Tucker Rients and then worked the WEM/JWP wrestler to his back to score a pin in 1:14.

Koby Nagel led 9-1 after the first period in the 145-pound match when his opponent, Kurtis Crosby, was unable to continue because of an injury. Nagel’s victory gave the Maroon and Gold six more points and increased their lead to 42-0.

Adam Schavey took a 5-0 lead into the second period and then scored a reversal before putting Jack Cahill’s shoulders to the mat in 2:34 at 152 pounds.

Max Ehrich received a forfeit at 160 pounds making it 54-0 in favor of BEA.

The 170-pound match went the whole distance with Kean Hicks earning a decisive 19-6 major decision over Ted Carlson and increase BEA’s lead to 58-0.

Nick Frank at 182 pounds and Luke Mertens at 195 both used the same formula to defeat their opponents by falls. Each wrestler scored a takedown and turned their foes to record first-period falls.

Frank pinned Keegan Kuball in 27 seconds and Mertens earned his fall over Sam Carlson in 25 seconds. BEA’s lead was now at 70-0.

Nick Lawrence received a forfeit at 220 pounds and Ian Cornelio pinned Jacob Karsten in 50 seconds in the 285-pound match to complete the scoring and give the hometown Bucs their 82-0 triumph.
