Seven Bucs in finals
Seven Blue Earth Area Buccaneers wrestlers and one United South Central Rebel wrestler qualified for the championship round during the opening session of the Section 2A Individual Tournament held in Blue Earth on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Ty Peterson at 113 pounds, Davis Sunken at 120, Caleb Beeler at 132, Jaxen Klinkner at 138, Koby Nagel at 145, Max Ehrich at 160 and Luke Mertens at 195 all went undefeated in Thursday’s action. Bryce Sonnek qualified for the Rebels in the 113-pound weight bracket.
The top two wrestlers in each weight bracket qualify for the State Tournament. If a wrestler wins, he is in. However, if he loses the championship match, he could have to wrestle a true second match.
What is a true second match?
If a wrestler loses his finals match, he will have to wrestle the third place winner for ‘true second’ if he did not defeat them previously in the tournament. If he already beat them, he takes second place and earns a spot in the state tournament.
The other seven BEA wrestlers stayed alive in the wrestlebacks and have not been eliminated from the tournament.
“Overall, I thought we wrestled well,” head coach Randy Wirtjes said. “There is still a lot of work to be done tomorrow (Friday).”
Following is the rundown of the seven
first-place contests involving the Buc wrestlers.
The No. 1-seeded Peterson was set to face the No. 2-seeded Sonnek in the 113-pound championship match.
Sunken, also a No. 1 seed, was going to be up against Boden Simon, the No. 2 seed, from Maple River.
Beeler, who came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed at 132 pounds, was matched up against the No. 1-seeded Charlie Elwood from Medford.
Klinkner kept his hopes alive of qualifying for another State Tournament. The No. 1-seeded senior was matched up against the No. 3-seeded Alec Johnson of Kenyon-Wanamingo.
In the 145-pound weight bracket, Nagel was also looking for a return trip to the State Tournament and was set to take on the No. 2-seeded Tate Hermes of Medford.
Ehrich came into the tournament seeded No. 1 at 160 pounds. The junior was set to meet the No. 3-seeded Josiah Hedensten of Medford.
Mertens was the No. 3-seeded wrestler at 195 pounds and was scheduled to wrestle the No. 1-seeded Colten Krell of Westfield.
The seven BEA wrestlers involved in the wrestlebacks are Caleb Langager at 106 pounds, Jacob Beeler at 126, Adam Schavey at 145, Kean Hicks at 170, Nick Frank at 182, Nick Lawrence at 220 and Ian Cornelio at 285.
The State Tournament for indiviuals will be held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Feb. 28-29.
