Youth baseball set to begin play on July 6
An alternative to the canceled 2020 American Legion baseball season has taken shape and a league consisting of seven teams has been formed.
Blue Earth, Fairmont, Truman, Martin County West, Jackson, Windom and Madelia are the teams which will compete in the Southwest Minnesota “Senior League.”
“The league will have games on Monday and Thursday nights with the first games being played on Monday, July 6,” Blue Earth coach Brent Legred says. “The plan is to play double headers two nights a week for four consecutive weeks. A league tournament the weekend of Aug. 1 will bring the shortened season to a close.”
There is an added requirement which is necessary for the league to go forward with games.
“Players and coaches will be required to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver,” Legred shares. “This is a one-year only league and is designed to fill the gap left by the cancellation of the Legion baseball season.”
Younger ballplayers will also start league play on July 6.
“We will have three other leagues. One league will be for fourth and fifth graders, another will be for sixth and seventh graders and the last league will be made up of eighth and ninth graders,” Legred explains. “They will play two nights a week. One night will be a single game and the other night they will play a doubleheader. This will give them three games each week.”
These leagues will also wrap up their season with a tournament the weekend of Aug. 1, according to Legred.
