Jimmy Allis took a turn on the mound in BE/W’s game against La Crescent on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The Blue Earth/Winnebago Senior League team returned to baseball action after a two-week hiatus when they traveled to La Crescent to play in a three team tournament on Saturday, Aug. 15.

In addition to the host La Crescent team, the other team in the tournament was from Viroqua, Wisconsin, which is located just over 30 miles southeast of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Viroqua was the first opponent of the day for BE/W. Viroqua entered the game with a record of 49-17 and added another win to their total with a 4-3 extra-inning win over BE/W.

BE/W scored once in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Karson Legred got on base with a two-out single and scored when the third baseman committed an error on a ball hit by Keegan O’Brien.

Viroqua tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over BE/W.

Neither team scored in the fifth inning but BE/W plated two runners in the top of the sixth inning to go on top 3-2.

Ryan Madetzke started the inning by drawing a walk. Koby Nagel followed with a single past third base. A sacrifice bunt by Logan O’Hara advanced the runners to second and third base.

A double by Karson Legred scored Madetzke but Nagel only reached third base because he had to wait and see if the ball was going to be caught.

O’Brien then laid down a perfect bunt to bring Nagel home with the third run of the game for BE/W.

Viroqua scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to erase BE/W’s one-run lead and tie the game at 3-3.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning but Viroqua scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the 4-3 victory.

O’Brien went all eight innings for BE/W and did not allow an earned run. He struck out seven batters and walked four.

BE/W had six hits in the game. Legred and Nagel each had two hits.

La Crescent 8, BE/W 5

BE/W jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but did not score again until the top of the seventh inning and lost to La Crescent 8-5 in the last game of the day.

Viroqua had defeated La Crescent 3-1 earlier in the day.

Logan O’Hara drew a one-out base on balls to put a runner on for BE/W in the top of the first inning. O’Hara moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on Keegan O’Brien’s double.

A single by Luke Mertens scored O’Brien when he beat the throw to home plate, with Mertens advancing to second base.

Mertens moved to third on a wild pitch. Kean Hicks walked and ran to second when nobody was covering second base. Both runners came home on a single by Carter Bell.

La Crescent scored once in the bottom of the first inning and twice in the bottom of the second to cut BE/W’s lead to 3-2.

La Crescent added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead of BE/W 8-4.

Jimmy Allis was hit by a pitch, Ryan Madetzke reached on an error and Koby Nagel singled to load the bases for BE/W in the top of the seventh inning. A walk to Karson Legred brought in the fifth run of the game for BE/W but it was not enough and La Crescent held on for the 8-5 win.

Nagel, Allis, Hicks and O’Hara all pitched for BE/W in the game.

O’Brien went 2 for 4 in the game with a double and Mertens was 2 for 3 with a double. BE/W had a total of eight hits to 11 for La Crescent.
