USC football team starts season 1-0

The United South Central Rebel football team scored all of their points in the second quarter, propelling them to a 22-6 win over Cleveland in their first game of the season.

The game was played in Wells on Friday night, Oct. 9.

Cleveland scored first, on their second possession, with a 10-play drive down the field that ended with a 40-yard touchdown run on a fourth and 11 situation. The try for extra point failed.

The Rebels first three possessions ended with turning the ball over on downs, a fumble and an interception.

But, then in the second quarter, the offense caught fire.

After stopping Cleveland and forcing a punt, USC took just three plays to score. The TD came on a 51 yard pass play from quarterback Ethan Dallman to Jackson Spizzirri. Dallman ran the ball in for the two-point conversion.

After forcing another Cleveland punt on their next possession, the Rebels took just four plays this time to get their second touchdown marching 54 yards down the field.

The score came on a three-yard run by Spizzirri. This time the PAT try failed, and the Rebels had a 14-6 lead.

Once again USC forced a Cleveland punt on their next possession.

This time it once again took just four plays to go 67 yards for the score. The touchdown came on a seven-yard pass completion from Dallman to Nick Bushlack.

Bushlack handed the ball off to Spizzirri for a successful two-point conversion and the Rebels had their 22-6 lead which ended up being the final score.

There was no scoring by either team in the second half. The Rebels ended four of Cleveland’s second half possessions by interceptions. The Rebels had one lost fumble, a pass intercepted and three punts in the second half. Their final possession ended with the clock running out at the end of the game.

USC had 17 first downs to Cleveland’s 10. They had 330 total yards of offense to Cleveland’s 185. The total number of plays was about even, with Cleveland running 56 plays and USC 54.

Dallman was 9 of 17 passing for 186 yards. Riley Staloch had four catches for 82 yards, Spizzirri had two for 72 yards and Bushlack two for 22 yards.

The Rebels had 144 yards rushing in the game. Dallman gained 54 yards on 15 carries and Spizzirri had 54 yards on 14 carries. Colten Quade had 22 yards on four carries and Nathaniel Clore had 14 yards on three tries.

Micah Hamson led the team on defense with 11 tackles. Spizzirri added nine and Staloch eight tackles for the team. Bushlack had two interceptions and Spizzirri and Staloch had one each.

Cleveland completed 12 of 27 pass attempts for 128 yards. They had 57 yards rushing.

Next up for the Rebels was a game this past Friday, Oct. 16, at Alden-Conger.
