Volleyball team opens play with victory
The United South Central girls volleyball team got the season off on the right foot on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Rebels downed the Maple River Eagles by a score of 3-0. The game scores were 25-14, 25-22, 25-15.
“Always great to start the season with a ‘W,'” Rebel coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “Our kids came in with the confidence that they could play at a high level, and they did so tonight in our first outing of the year. Overall, it was a great win for us.”
Rebel senior middle hitter Josie Schumann led the team with 10 kills, six digs, three blocks and three aces.
“Josie really stood out to me tonight as her experience and leadership was evident on every point,” the coach said. “She’s taken her game to the next level and that helped pull us through.”
Melany Ehlert, a junior outside hitter, added six kills, five digs and one ace.
Kiera Schultz had three kills, Izzy O’Rourke added a one kill and one dig and Kylie Niebuhr had one kill and 10 digs.
“I thought we won the serve/serve receive battle,” Kuechenmeister said. “And that was the emphasis tonight so it was great to see the kids rise to the occasion in that department. At points we lost our rhythm offensively, so we’re going to have to continue to work on our setter/hitter connection, because when we’re in system we can be a tough team to stop as we have a lot of options.”
Dani Kirkeide added four digs and two aces for the Rebels, while Hannah Olson had three digs and two aces.
Junior setter Sam Swanson had 20 assists and one kill and one dig.
“I was proud of the job Sam did taking over the reins of our offense from the setting position,” Kuechenmeister said. “I thought she set a solid match for us, and she continues to get better every time she hits the floor.”
