Wrestlers down the St. Peter Saints
But come up short against No. 4-ranked Red Bulls in triangular
The Class A No. 10-ranked Blue Earth Area wrestling team suffered their first loss of the season when the Class AA No. 4-ranked Fairmont Cardinals defeated the Bucs 42-27 during a triangular meet hosted by the Cardinals on Friday, Jan. 29.
Fairmont won at 106 pounds by a major decision and at 113 pounds by decision before scoring three consecutive pins over BEA at 120, 126 and 132 pounds.
BEA’s first points of the night came in the 138-pound match when Ty Peterson won by a 5-2 decision over Aden Welcome of Fairmont.
The next four matches all went to Fairmont, three of them by major decision and one by a pin.
With four matches to go the Cardinals were leading 42-3.
The Buccaneers finished on a strong note by winning the last four matches, all by pins.
Adam Schavey pinned Fairmont’s Gage Cyphers in 3:48 at 182 pounds.
BEA’s Nick Frank fell behind early to Max Olson in the 195-pound match before earning a 4-4 tie after two periods and pinning Olson with 31 seconds left in the third period.
Logan Johnson bumped up to 220 pounds and gained a fall over the Cards’ Tristan Peterson in 1:01.
The Bucs’ Luke Mertens also moved up a weight class and wrestled Alec Thompson in the 285-pound match. Mertens won by a first-period fall in 1:09.

The Bucs won 12 of 14 matches against the Saints in their first contest at the Fairmont Triangular.
Cooper Peterson at 106 pounds, Caleb Langager at 113, Nick Nelson at 152, Nick Frank at 182, Adam Schavey at 195, Logan Johnson at 220 and Luke Mertens at 285 all won by pins.
Brody Anderson won by a forfeit at 132 pounds.
Carson Sturtz at 120 pounds, Ty Peterson at 138, Max Ehrich at 160 and Kean Hicks all won by decisions.
