Boys basketball team improves their record to 9-1 for the season

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers went on the road to play the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights in a non-conference basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 16, and came home with a 77-48 victory. The win improved BEA’s record to 9-1.

The Bucs and the Knights were locked in a close battle through the opening seven minutes of the game with BEA holding a slight edge at 16-14.

Cameron Anderson’s 3-pointer put the Bucs up 19-14 and began an 11-0 run over the next three minutes which gave BEA control of the game. Austin Thielfoldt followed Anderson’s long-range shot with one of his own to make the score 22-14 and then scored on an inbounds pass to make the score 24-14. Three free throws, one by Thielfoldt and two by Braden Gudahl, had the Bucs on top 27-14 with 7:34 left in the first half.

The Maroon and Gold maintained their lead and closed the first half holding a 38-27 advantage.

BEA continued to increase their advantage in the second half. Ashton Lloyd’s two free throws with 8:18 remaining in the game put the Bucs up 57-37.

The Bucs ended up outscoring the Knights 39-19 in the second half to earn the 31-point triumph. They made 21 of 36 2-point shot attempts, seven of 18 attempts from 3-point range, and 14 of 20 free throws.

Rebounding statistics were close with BEA holding a slight 31-27 edge.

Four different Bucs reached double-figures in scoring led by Anderson with 19 points. Thielfoldt tallied 17, Gudahl added 13 and Ashton Lloyd finished with 11.

Anderson also led the team with six rebounds. Lloyd and Gudahl had five rebounds each and Gavin Storbeck pulled down four rebounds.

BEA traveled to St. Peter on Feb. 19, to take on the Saints, who they defeated in an overtime game, back on Jan. 16. They are scheduled to return home on Thursday, Feb. 25, to take on Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

BEA 67, St. James 54

St. James played host to the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in boys basketball on Friday, Feb. 12, in a battle of Big South Conference opponents.

The Bucs outscored the Saints 38-26 in the first half and 29-28 in the second half to win the game of 67-54.

BEA was led by Cameron Anderson and Ashton Lloyd who each scored 16 points. Also reaching double figures in scoring were Austin Thielfoldt with 12 points and Braden Gudahl with 11.

Lloyd pulled down 10 rebounds, Gudahl had seven, Gavin Storbeck and Anderson had six each, Will Howard finished with five and Thielfoldt had four.

BEA made 62 percent of their 2-point shots, making 18 of 29 attempts. The Bucs attempted 30 3-pointers and made eight.

The Bucs controlled the boards by outrebounding the Saints by a 42-25 margin and had 11 steals to only six for St. James.
