Rebel wrestlers go 1-2 for the week

The United South Central Rebel wrestling team ran into a tough Medford Tiger team on Monday, March 1, and lost by a score of 60-21.

The Rebels briefly held the lead a couple of times early in the match before losing the final seven contests.

After losing by forfeit at 106 pounds and by a fall at 113 the Rebels staged a comeback.

Bryce Sonnek won by a fall at 3:39 at 120 pounds, Byron Getchell took a 2-0 decision at 126 and Ethan Elvebak won by a fall at 3:19 at 132.

That put the Rebels on top by a score of 15-12.

USC had to forfeit at 138 pounds giving the lead to Medford at 18-15. However, a pin by Micah Hamson at 145 in 1:49 put the Rebels back on top 21-18.

Unfortunately that was the last time USC would score. They lost by forfeits at 152, 160 and 170 pounds, by falls at 182 and 195, and by forfeits at 220 and 285.

USC 50, WEM-JWP 18

The USC Rebels took on the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Grizzlies as part of a triangular on Thursday, Feb. 25.

The Rebels came out with a big 50-18 win.

Brayden Mithun got the Rebels off to a great start with a win by a fall at 106 pounds in 1:24. Kolt Bullerman won by forfeit at 113.

Then Bryce Sonnek pinned his opponent in 45 seconds at 120 pounds and Byron Getchell did the same at 126 in 1:07.

After a nonscoring double forfeit at 132 pounds, Ethan Elvebak took a 14-4 major decision at 138 pounds, Gavin Bird won by forfeit at 145 and Micah Hamson took a 19-6 major decision at 152.

That gave the Rebels a 38-0 lead. USC had to forfeit the next three matches at 160, 170 and 182 pounds, and both teams forfeited at 195 pounds, making the score 38-18.

Collin Van Cleave won by a forfeit at 220 pounds and Matt Beyer won by a fall at 285 in 3:41, for a final score of 50-18.


The USC Rebels were not so fortunate in their second match of the night on Thursday, Feb. 25.

They fell 72-6 to a strong Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland Bulldogs wrestling team.

Byron Getchell got the Rebels only score by pinning his opponent in 5:26 in the 126 pound match.

Bryce Sonnek lost a close 6-4 match at 120 pounds and Micah Hamson lost 4-0 at 145.

The Rebels gave up seven forfeits and were pinned in four matches.
