Rebel baseball team goes 3-0 for the week

Big win over Panthers improves USC’s overall record to 11-6

The United South Central Rebels baseball team exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 16-3 victory on Tuesday, May 26.

The win came against the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers in a game played in New Richland.

The Rebels led 2-1 after the first inning, 6-3 after the second inning, then added a run in the third inning. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, before USC put the game away with the nine run production in the top of the fifth, while holding NRHEG scoreless in the bottom of the final inning.

The Rebels had nine hits in the game, led by Ian Crawford who went 4 for 5 at the plate, including a double and a triple and accounted for four RBI.

Andy Krohnberg had a good night batting as well, going 3 for 4 and an RBI. Nick Bushlack had just one hit, but it was a double and accounted for two RBI. Jackson Spirrizzi had a hit and two RBI also.

Winning pitcher was Blake Schroeder who pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on four hits, walked four batters and struck out two. Bryce Sonnek came in for 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two.

The Rebels had two errors in the game and the Panthers had six.

USC 5, WEM 4

It was a close one, but the United South Central Rebels baseball team pulled out a 5-4 win over the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers on Monday, May 24, at home.

The Rebels took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Bucs tied it up with a run in the top of the fourth.

USC took a one run lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 2-1.

However, WEM came up with three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead over USC. The Rebels responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, to regain the lead at 5-4.

USC then kept WEM scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Ian Crawford was the Rebels leader both on the mound and at the plate.

He pitched all seven innings, allowed four runs on six hits, walked three batters and struck out seven.

At the plate Crawford was 2 for 3 and scored a run. One of his hits was a double. The Rebels tallied seven hits, one each by Nick Bushlack, Bryce Sonnek, Andy Krohnberg, Zale Bushlack and Konnor Harpestad. Nick Bushlack and Zale Bushlack were credited with two RBI each.


The United South Central Rebels baseball team notched another victory when they defeated the Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Jaguars 6-4 on Friday, May 21.

The Rebels scored five runs in the second inning to take a big lead, but the Jaguars responded with three in the fourth to get close at 5-3.

USC got another run in the bottom of the fourth, while stopping a T/ML/GHEC threat in the seventh when the Jaguars scored one run before the Rebels shut them down.

Both the Rebels and Jaguars had six hits in the game. Konnor Harpestad was 2 for 2 at the plate and scored a run to lead USC.

Ian Crawford and Zale Bushlack were both 1 for 3 and scored a run, Jackson Spirrizzi was 1 for 2 and scored a run and had an RBI and Ethan Elvebak was 1 for 1, a double.

Nick Bushlack had two RBI, Bryce Sonnek one.

Blake Schroeder was the winning pitcher, going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed the four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out five. Sonnek came in for 2/3 inning in relief.

USC had four errors to T/ML/GHEC’s two, and both teams left six runners stranded on base.
