Wells Legion team downs BE/W

Big innings by Post 210 lead them to a convincing 16-6 triumph

The Wells Post 210 American Legion baseball team handed the Blue Earth/Winnebago Post 89 and 82 team their first loss of the season, 16-6, in the final game before the playoffs begin. The game was played at Veterans Field in Blue Earth on Monday, July 5.

Wells jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings before BE/W finally got on the board.

Wells scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Bryce Sonnek reached on an error and advanced to second base on an errant pick-off attempt. Taylor Connelly walked and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. A single by Andy Khronberg gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The top of the third inning saw Wells add five more runs to their total. Two walks and a BEA error brought home the first run of the inning. A single to left field, another error, an infield hit and a wild pitch produced four more runs and put Wells on top 7-0.

BE/W surrendered four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to trail Wells 11-0.

BE/W managed to avoid losing by the 10-run rule when they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 11-4 in favor of Wells.

Keegan O’Brien, Logan O’Hara and Luke Mertens all reached base on walks. Ryan Madetzke hit a single to drive in one run. However, two errors on the play allowed two more runs to score. Nick Barke added another single to drive in Madetzke with the fourth run of the inning.

BE/W added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth but Wells scored five more runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the game 16-6.

The final statistics showed Wells scored 16 runs on 12 hits and three BE/W errors. BE/W tallied six runs on six hits and three Wells errors.

The Legion Baseball playoffs began on Thursday, July 8, in Blue Earth.
