Diamonds win last game of season

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Jul 25, 2021

The Blue Earth Diamonds softball team ended their season on a high note on Thursday, July 22, by downing the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers 13-3.

Kylee Eckmann, Olivia Dutton and Hannah Meyer shared the pitching duties and held the Bucs scoreless until the top of the seventh inning.

Meanwhile, the Diamonds offense feasted on the Bucs’ pitching.

Blue Earth, playing at home, scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eckmann singled to right and Olivia Dutton reached base on an infield hit. McKenna Dutton singled to drive in Eckmann with the first run of the game. Claire Sullivan doubled to drive in the second and third run.

After a scoreless second inning, the Diamonds added four more runs in the bottom of the third stanza.

Olivia Dutton singled and advanced to third base on two infield groundouts. Sullivan singled to plate Dutton with the fourth run of the contest. Clara Ziegler reached on an error to put runners on first and second base. A single by Berkley Hagedorn brought home Sullivan and advanced Ziegler to third base. Hagedorn stole second base and both runners scored when Roxanne Quintero doubled. The Diamonds now led 7-0.

Olivia Dutton drove in one run and McKenna Dutton hit a double to bring home two more runs in the fourth inning to build the Diamonds’ lead to 10-0.

It had been decided to forego the 10-run rule so the teams continued playing a complete seven-inning game.
