Pirates down the Spiders 8-3
Begin playoffs with game against the Eagle Lake Expos
The Blue Earth Pirates pounded out an 8-3 win over the Cleveland Spiders on July 24 to wrap up their regular season with an 11-4 record and a third place finish in the 13/60 Baseball League.
Brandyn Olsen stroked a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning against the Spiders to give the Pirates their first base runner. Garret Anderson’s single plated Olsen with the first run of the game. A double by Lee Hodges, a walk to Hunter Bleess and an error charged to the centerfielder on a ball hit off of the bat of Zac Schonrock resulted in three more runs. Blue Earth led 4-0 after one inning.
The Pirates added two more runs each in the second and third innings to account for their eight runs.
Blue Earth tallied 15 hits and five walks during the game.
Anderson started on the mound for the Pirates. He pitched six innings and was charged with two earned runs on three hits. He walked one batter and struck out four.
Olsen pitched the seventh inning and gave up one hit while striking out two Cleveland batters.
Hodges pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits. He struck out one batter and did not issue any walks.
Five Pirate batters had multiple-hit games. Olsen led the way with four hits, including one double. Kaylan Legred had three singles and scored two runs. Ryan Vereide had a single and a double and scored twice. TJ Schmidtke also singled and doubled during the game.
Blue Earth received the fifth seed in the 16-team bracket for Region 6C. The Pirates began post-season play on Sunday, Aug. 1, when they hosted the Eagle Lake Expos at 6 p.m. at Veterans Field in Blue Earth. The winner of that contest will face the winner of a game between Gaylord and Cleveland, who also play on Aug. 1. The losers of the two games played on Aug. 1 will also face off at a time to be determined.
