USC defeats the Clippers 42-14

Defense holds Cleveland to 96 yards of total offense in the game

The United South Central Rebel football team had a commanding 28-6 lead at the half of their homecoming game against the Cleveland Clippers on Friday night, Oct. 1.

USC ended up winning the game 42-14 for a very successful homecoming.

The Rebels set the tone of the game right away.

After holding Cleveland to three plays and a punt on their first possession, USC went on a seven-play, 70-yard march down the field which culminated in a 25-yard run for a touchdown by Brendan Drescher.

The pass attempt for a two-point conversion failed, but the Rebels led 6-0.

Their second score came later in the first quarter. This time it was a six-play, 29-yard march with a score on a 26-yard pass from Nick Bushlack to Jon Martinez. And, this time the two-point conversion was good on a run by Colton Quade.

Quade scored the Rebels’ next touchdown on a two-yard run that came at the end of a 59-yard, nine-play drive. Bushlack ran the ball in for the two-point conversion.

The Clippers got on the scoreboard with a six-play, 40-yard drive near the end of the first half that culminated in a touchdown, but they had a missed extra point try.

There was still enough time left for the Rebels to get another touchdown before the half expired. It took three plays and ended with a 21-yard TD run by Quade.

The PAT failed, but the Rebels took their 28-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

USC would score once each in the third and fourth quarters.

The first one came on a 39-yard pass play from Bushlack to Drescher. The PAT kick by Bob Schinder was good.

In the final quarter, the Rebels got a touchdown after the Clippers fumbled the ball and USC’s Ethan Elvebak recovered it in the endzone for a score. Schindler kicked the extra point and the score was 42-6.

Cleveland got one more touchdown with a two-point conversion right at the end of the game to make the final 42-14.

Overall the Rebels had 290 yards of total offense, while the Clippers had 96. The Rebels had 13 first downs to their six and ran 55 plays to their 47.

Bushlack was 10 of 19 passing for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Martinez caught four passes for 59 yards and a TD, while Drescher had 44 yards on the one catch good for a TD. Taylor Conley had three catches for 34 yards and Quade had two snags for 15 yards.

Drescher was the leading runner with 73 yards on 11 attempts and one TD. Quade added 61 yards on 15 totes with two scores.

Bushlack carried five times for 11 yards, and Martinez rushed once for nine yards.

Cleveland was 5 of 15 passing for 27 yards, and rushed 32 times for 69 yards.

The Rebels’ next game was set for Friday, Oct. 8, against Mayer-Lutheran. Those results will be in the next issue of the Faribault County Register.

This week USC hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a Thursday night, Oct. 14 contest at Wells Concrete Stadium.
