Basketball shot clock to be used starting in 2023

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Dec 12, 2021

The 35-second shot clock is coming to high school basketball in Minnesota.

At a meeting of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) board of directors on Dec. 2, a motion was passed to implement the shot clock beginning in the 2023-2024 season for both boys and girls basketball.

The adoption of a shot clock for varsity level competition will be required, according to a press release from the MSHSL. Under provisions of the adoption, member schools may use the shot clock at sub-varsity levels by consensus of competing schools.

Minnesota becomes the 13th state association to adopt a shot clock for varsity-level basketball games. It joins the neighboring states of Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota in deciding to use a shot clock.

Feedback from MSHSL member schools showed 75 percent supported the implementation of a shot clock within the next three years.

Currently, 19 percent of the schools who gave feedback to the MSHSL have shot clocks installed.

At present in Minnesota, the shot clock may be used in regular-season non-conference contests or invitational tournaments if both schools agree, the host school is properly equipped and the assigned officials approve.

“We are excited it passed,” Pat Barrett, of the Minnesota Girls Basketball Association, said. “The state of basketball is excited to start using it.”

Blue Earth Area activities director Rob Norman said the high school gymnasium will be ready to go for the 2023-2024 season.

“We don’t really have a choice,” he noted. “We will have to budget for it and also decide if the scorer’s table is large enough to handle another person to run the shot clock, But, we have time to work those things out.”
