Adam Schavey, above, was named Player of the Year in football for the South Central District Blue Sub-District.

Adam Schavey has been selected as the Player of the Year in football for the South Central District Blue Sub-District. Teammate Kean Hicks was chosen as the Linebacker of the Year. In addition to Schavey and Hicks, Luke Norman, Luke Schonborn and Ashton Lloyd were selected to the All-District team from Blue Earth Area while Logan O’Hara and Vern Johnson received honorable mention.

The South Central District Blue Sub-District includes teams from Blue Earth Area, Maple River, Le Sueur/Henderson, Sibley East and Norwood Young America.

Schavey was the quarterback for the 8-2 Bucs and led the team in rushing with 1,583 yards and while throwing for another 473 yards. He ran for 27 touchdowns and threw for seven more.

Under his leadership, BEA averaged 40.6 points per game and gained an average of 375 yards per contest. The Bucs had 52 plays which totaled 20 yards or more.

On defense Schavey recorded 60 total tackles with 35 of those being unassisted. He had one interception and returned it for a touchdown.

“He is a workhorse,” BEA head coach Randy Kuechenmeister says of Schavey. “He is tough and a very good football player on both sides of the ball. He likes the contact part of the game. He has good vision as a runner and arm tackles do not bring him down.”

Hicks, who just competed in the 49th Minnesota High School All-Star game, recorded 28 unassisted and 27 assisted tackles during the 2021 season. He had half of a sack, one interception and one fumble recovery. On offense, he was a guard who helped clear the way for the Bucs to amass 3,756 yards of offense.

“Kean is an excellent leader,” Kuechenmeister comments. “He is a very physical football player. He is a very good blocker who runs well and can get downfield to lead the play.”

Norman was selected as an offensive and defensive lineman. Schonborn was named to the team as a running back and linebacker. Lloyd was chosen as a split end on offense and as a defensive end. O’Hara and Johnson received honorable mention as offensive/defensive linemen.

“These guys are all good football players who had multiple roles on the squad,” Kuechenmeister notes. “They are all unselfish, love to play and bought into the team concept. They did what needed to be done for us to be successful and they made BEA a better football team.”
