BEA’s Sophie Keister soars high for this shot in a recent Buccaneer girls basketball game.

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team traveled to Martin Luther High School in Northrop on Tuesday, Jan. 11 to take on the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars in a non-conference game.

The two teams had met less than two weeks earlier during the Blue Earth Area Holiday Tournament. In that game, BEA jumped out to a 27-19 halftime lead before falling to the Jags by a final score of 61-38.

In the rematch, it was GHEC/T/ML who built a 51-22 lead at the half on their way to a 67-31 triumph over BEA.

The Jaguars got off twice as many shots than the Bucs from two-point range. The home team made 22 of their 48 2-pointers while the Maroon and Gold could convert on only nine of their 24 shots from inside of the arc.

When it came to 3-pointers, BEA made three of their 12 attempts compared to GHEC/T/ML, who were four of 10 from outside of the arc.

The Bucs attempted 10 free throws and made four. The Jags went to the charity stripe 16 times and made 11.

BEA outrebounded their opponents 30-29. However, the Bucs committed 29 turnovers while forcing only seven against the Jags.

Maddie Schiltz was the leading scorer for BEA with nine points. Lola Lundquist tallied six and Kate Armon added five. Schiltz also led the team with eight rebounds while Sophie Keister had five.

The loss drops the Bucs’ record to 3-8. Next up for BEA is a game against the Maple River Eagles in Blue Earth on Monday, Jan. 17.

Waseca 60, BEA 16

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team struggled to put points on the board against Waseca during their game in Blue Earth on Friday, Jan. 7, resulting in a 60-16 triumph for the visiting Bluejays.

Waseca opened the game by scoring the first six points before BEA’s Kate Armon hit a cutting Maddie Schiltz for the Bucs’ first two points of the night.

The Bluejays would score the next nine points before BEA’s Chloe Groe made one of two free throws to make the score 15-3 in favor of Waseca.

By halftime, the score was 27-11 with the Bluejays in control. Things did not go any better for the Bucs in the second half as they were only able to muster five points in the final 18 minutes of play.

The Bucs struggled to get shots off against Waseca’s defense. BEA only managed to attempt 15 two-point field goals during the game and they made five of those. Meanwhile, the Bluejays made 16 of their 35 shots from inside of the arc.

BEA made one of their 11 three-point shots while Waseca was 8-for-22 on 3-pointers.

The Bluejays also held the edge in rebounding by a 44-13 margin. The Bluejays had 25 offensive rebounds which led to 25 second-chance points.

Lola Lunquist led BEA in scoring with five points followed by Maddie Schiltz and Sophie Keister, who each tallied four points.
