Bucs wrestle to victory over Jays

Team wins first four matches in final meet of the regular season

The Blue Earth Area wrestling squad picked up another win when they traveled to Waseca on Feb. 4 to take on the Bluejays in a Big South Conference contest.

BEA scored the first 24 points on their way to a 49-24 victory over Waseca.

In the 106-pound match, the Bucs’ Timmy Nagel received a forfeit.

Cooper Peterson earned six more team points for the Bucs when he pinned Elijah Biehn in 47 seconds at 113 pounds.

BEA increased their lead to 18-0 when Carson Sturtz put John Feely’s shoulders to the mat in 1:49 in the 120-pound match.

Caleb Langager needed just 57 seconds to earn a fall against Waseca’s Slade Barnett at 126 pounds to make the score 24-0 in favor of the Maroon and Gold.

Waseca got on the board with a pin in the 132-pound match before BEA’s Blair Lunz received a forfeit at 138 pounds to give the Bucs a 30-6 lead.

The Bluejays won by falls at 145 and 152 pounds and by a decision at 160 pounds to narrow the score to 30-21 with six matches remaining.

Kean Hicks gave the Bucs some more breathing room when he pinned Carter Ellis in 41 seconds in the 170-pound match to make the score 36-21.

At 182 pounds, BEA’s Adam Schavey triumphed over Payton Garza 14-3. The major decision victory gave the Bucs four more points and increased their lead to 40-21.

Waseca picked up their final three points of the night when they won by a decision at 195 pounds.

BEA closed out the evening with two victories. Elijah Sanchez received a forfeit at 220 pounds and Kale Frank recorded a 1-0 decision at 285 pounds to make the final score 49-24.

The seeding meetings for the Section Tournaments will be held on Monday, Feb. 14.

The quarterfinal round for the Section Team Tournament will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the high seed.

St. Clair High School will host the semifinal and final rounds of the Section Team Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at 2 p.m.

Blue Earth Area High School will be the site of the Section Individual Tournament. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The State Tournament will take place for all classes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 3-5, at the Exel Energy Center in St. Paul.
