BEA's Maddie Schiltz was named to the BSC All-Conference honorable mention team.

The winter sports seasons are winding down and it is time to recognize athletes for their achievements.

The Big South Conference has announced their post-season awards for girls basketball and Blue Earth Area’s Maddie Schiltz has been named to the BSC All-Conference honorable mention team.

Schiltz, a senior post player, averaged 9.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season for the Bucs.

She did not miss a game for the Bucs this year and had a strong start to her season when she scored 10 points to help lead the Bucs to a victory over Redwood Valley before tallying 16 points against the St. Peter Saints.

“Her work ethic is fantastic,” BEA head coach Chris Voss commented. “She wants to learn, to absorb knowledge and try to improve every day.”

Voss noted she faced tough challenges every time she took the floor.

“She was usually matched up against girls who were taller than her,” he mentioned. “But she was gritty and tough and not afraid to take them on.”

Voss also appreciated her leadership at practices.

“She led by example but she was also excellent at encouraging her teammates and supporting them,” he shared.

Voss, who was in his first year at the helm of the BEA program, said prior to this season he had only seen film of Schiltz playing.

“A big difference I saw in her game this year compared to what I watched on film was the improvement she made on the offensive end of the court,” he noted. “It was obvious she spent some time working on her game.”

As much as her head coach was thankful for her effort on the court, he said he also enjoyed just having her around the team.

“One of the biggest things about Maddie is she is someone who just cares about everything,” Voss commented. “She is a neat kid who is fun to just have a conversation with and talk to.”
