The weather cooperated long enough for a tennis meet to be played and the Blue Earth Area boys made the most of the situation.

The Buccaneers’ tennis team came out swinging on Friday, April 1, and slammed Albert Lea 7-0 in their first match of the season. The contest was played on the Tigers’ home court in Albert Lea.

BEA’s four top singles players were each declared victorious in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Vern Johnson downed Albert Lea’s Shine Tuv 6-1, 6-1.

Nick Frundt only let his opponent, Adam Semple, score one point at No. 2 singles. Frundt won the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

No. 3 singles saw another BEA sweep, with Jamie Johnson downing Albert Lea’s Will Isaacson 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 4 singles, Joe Frundt did not let Albert Lea’s Garung Dual score a single point. Frundt slammed his competitor 6-0, 6-0.

BEA also took each doubles match, although Albert Lea was able to gain a few more points this time around.

At No. 1 doubles, BEA’s Seth Stevermer and Devin Haase battled a close set with Albert Lea’s Jack Doppelhammer and Alex Olson, eventually scoring a narrow 7-6 (7-3) victory. The match went to BEA after they took the second set 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, BEA’s Seth Mathews and Calvin Farrow were a force against Jadon Betz and Will Doppelhammer. The duo won the match 6-0, 6-3.

BEA’s No. 3 doubles players, Mitchell Stevermer and John Lappe, fought a little harder for their win against Cannon Kermes and Jacob Lvoma. The first set was BEA’s at 6-4, but Albert Lea took the second set 6-3. The third super-set of 11-9 determined BEA the winner, however.

Junior Varsity players Gustavo Chavero and Noah Hansen also scored a win for BEA against Lucas Miller and Aidan Halvorson, 4-0.

The BEA boys tennis team will face off with Redwood Valley on Monday, April 11, in their first home match of the season.

They will not have long to recover before their next event, a Tuesday, April 12 away match against Austin.
