BEA sweeps Pipestone in baseball

O’Hara and Barke both connect for three-run homers against Arrows

Blue Earth Area made the long trip to Pipestone on Monday, May 9, to take on the Arrows in a doubleheader.

It was a happy trip home for the Bucs who swept the Arrows, winning the first game 16-14 and the second game 5-3.

BEA 16, Pipestone 14

The opening game of the doubleheader was a wild one and it took an extra inning before the Bucs were able to earn the 16-14 victory.

The Bucs gave up two runs to the Arrows in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 14-14 and keep Pipestone in the game.

Colton Hubly led off the top of the eighth inning with a double to center field.

Following a strike out, Carson Sturtz singled to center. Hubly advanced to third and Sturtz moved to second on the throw.

Soren Fering came to the plate and reached first base on a dropped third strike. Hubly scored and Sturtz moved to third on the play.

Next, the Bucs pulled off a double steal with Fering stealing second and Abram Kokos, who came in to run for Sturtz, sliding in to home ahead of the tag to give BEA a 16-14 lead.

Bucs’ pitcher Logan O’Hara retired the Eagles in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve the victory for the Bucs.

Anthony Carr started on the mound for BEA. He went four innings and was charged with seven runs, four earned. He gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out three.

Taylor Davids came on in relief of Carr to start the fifth inning. He was charged with seven runs, three earned, while giving up five hits, walking five and striking out one. He was credited with the win.

O’Hara got a save by pitching one inning. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and struck out one batter.

O’Hara, who hit a three-run home run in the first inning, drove in a total of eight runs while going 4-for-5 at the plate.

Soren Fering, Carson Sturtz and Caleb Langager each had two hits in the game. Langager also drove in two runs while Sturtz drove in one.

BEA 5, Pipestone 3

The Bucs completed the sweep of the doubleheader with a 5-3 win over the Arrows in the second game. The contest was called after five innings because of darkness.

Logan O’Hara went the distance on the mound. The big right hander gave up three runs, one earned, on six hits. He walked two batters and struck out one.

BEA was the home team for the second game and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Kean Hicks hit a one-out single. He stole second base and went to third on Logan O’Hara’s single.

Anthony Carr replaced O’Hara as a courtesy runner. Nick Barke came to the plate and belted a three-run homer to center field to give the Bucs an early 3-0 lead.

Both teams scored one run in the second inning to make it 4-1 in favor of BEA after two complete innings.

Pipestone scored two in the top of the fourth to cut BEA’s lead to 4-3.

The Maroon and Gold added one more run in the bottom of the fourth when Caleb Langager reached first on an error by the shortstop. Langager then stole second and third base and scored on a groundout by Soren Fering.

Kean Hicks, O’Hara and Barke each had two hits for the Bucs.

Windom Tournament

The Blue Earth Area baseball team traveled to Windom on Saturday, May 7, to compete in a four-team tournament.

They played the Fairmont Cardinals in their first game and then took on the host Eagles in their second game.

Fairmont 8, BEA 6

The undefeated, Class 2AA No. 2-ranked Fairmont Cardinals kept their unbeaten streak alive when they rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers by a final score of 8-6.

The Bucs had built a 5-2 advantage through the first four innings, but surrendered the lead when the Cards used three walks, a BEA error, a sacrifice fly and two singles to score six times in the top of the fifth and take an 8-5 lead.

BEA had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Soren Fering walked and advanced to third base on a one-out single by Logan O’Hara.

The Bucs pulled off a double steal with O’Hara safe at second and Fering coming home with the first run of the game.

O’Hara led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double. He remained at second when Nick Barke laid down a bunt for a single. With Caleb Langager running for Barke, Adam Schavey executed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third base.

A double by Parker Meyers brought home both runners for the Bucs’ second and third runs of the game.

Meyers stole third base and scored on a Fairmont error.

Following an out, Abram Kokos reached base on a walk. An error on a ball off of the bat of Carson Sturtz enabled Kokos to advance to third base.

The Bucs pulled off another double steal with Sturtz taking second and Kokos scoring BEA’s fifth run of the game.

The Bucs’ final run came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kean Hicks led off with a single and went to third on a single by O’Hara. Hicks scored on a ground out by Langager.

O’Hara led the team with three hits while Meyers had two. O’Hara and Meyers each had a double and Meyers drove in two runs.

Barke threw four innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on two hits while walking six batters. He struck out three.

Caleb Langager pitched three innings in relief and surrendered two runs on four hits while walking three batters.

Windom 9, BEA 7

The Eagles broke a 7-7 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held the Bucs scoreless in the top of the seventh to pocket a 9-7 victory over BEA.

Windom scored in each of the six innings they batted.

The Eagles had nine runs on 10 hits and committed three errors.

BEA scored seven runs on 11 hits and they were charged with two errors.

Abram Kokos and Soren Fering each pitched three innings for the Bucs.

BEA 14, St. James 11

The Blue Earth Area Bucs scored 14 runs on nine hits and did not commit an error when they defeated St. James 14-11 at Veterans Field in Blue Earth on Friday, May 6.

BEA used three pitchers with Logan O’Hara throwing the first three innings, Nick Barke tossing one inning and Anthony Carr hurling the last three innings.

O’Hara was not his usual sharp self and gave up eight runs on nine hits.

Barke yielded two runs on two hits while Carr gave up one run on two hits in his three innings of work.

Caleb Langager and Carson Sturtz each drove in three runs for the Bucs. Soren Fering, O’Hara and Parker Meyers each drove in two.
