USC golf teams wrap up regular season with final Gopher Conference Tournament

By Chuck Hunt - Editor | May 29, 2022

The United South Central Rebel boys’ golf team participated in the end of the season Gopher Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 19, at Waseca’s Lakeside Country Club, on a weird weather day – sunny, rainy, calm, windy, warm, cool, etc. In fact, given weather uncertainties, the tournament was shortened from its original 18-hole structure to a simplified 9-hole structure.

There were eight teams at this tournament and the Rebels finished in second place – just one stroke out of first place. The top five teams were separated by a mere seven strokes.

Hayfield won the tournament with a score of 171. USC was one stroke back at 172 for second. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton was one stroke back of USC at 173 for third place.

Blooming Prairie took fourth with 177, Triton was fifth with 178, Kenyon-Wanamingo was sixth at 195, Maple River seventh with 207 and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva was eighth with an incomplete.

The USC Rebel golfers were also closely grouped together, once again.

Kadyn Neubauer and Blake Bullerman shot identical 42s, Luke Pederson shot 43, Carter Hart shot 45, Nick Schindler shot 49, and Levi Hinkley shot 60.

The USC boys golf team finished the regular season with a record of 32-11. They begin postseason tournament play at North Links Golf Course, near North Mankato, on Tuesday, May 31. The public is invited to attend.

The United South Central girls golf team also participated in their final conference meet at Waseca Lakeside on Thursday, May 19. This, too, was scheduled as an 18-hole tournament with all schools in the conference competing.

Strange weather, including a heavy downpour during the golfers’ first nine holes created an unwanted delay and impending severe weather led coaches to make the decision to put the golfers back out to simply finish their first nine holes.

The meet was thus essentially shortened to a 9-hole meet.

The Rebel girls finished in fourth place with a 255. Freshman Emma Heggen led the way for the Rebels, shooting a 52 and placing sixth. Senior Elizabeth Romano came in ninth with a 54.
