By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Jul 3, 2022

Somewhere in the dust is third base, the ball, the third baseman’s glove and the legs of Colton Hubly as he attempts to stretch a double into a triple. Dusty conditions made it hard to see.

Jimmy Allis pitched a complete-game shutout and his Winnebago/Blue Earth Legion teammates provided the offensive firepower in a 10-0 triumph over Martin County West in the opening game of a doubleheader on Thursday night, June 30, in Blue Earth.

W/BE took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Caleb Langager walked and went to second base on a wild pitch. He then stole third base and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Logan O’Hara.

The home team added single runs in the second and third innings to build a 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, W/BE erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game with a 10-run triumph.

Allis allowed only two hits during his stellar pitching performance. He also benefitted from some fine defensive play in the field, including a double play in the top of the fourth inning.

Colton Hubly had two doubles in the game, Parker Meyers had a triple and Allis had a double.

W/BE 10, MCW 0

W/BE won the second game of the doubleheader by an identical 10-0 score.

The home team put four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out, Nick Barke was hit by a pitch. Logan O’Hara followed with a single to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance a base and a double by Parker Meyers brought both runners home with the only runs W/BE would need.

Logan O’Hara pitched the first two innings before being relieved by Peyton O’Hara.

Wells 11, W/BE 8

Winnebago/Blue Earth’s Legion baseball team’s rally fell short and the Wells Legion team held on for an 11-8 victory in a game played on June 23, in Wells.

W/BE scored once in the bottom of the first. Singles by Soren Fering and Parker Meyers were sandwiched around a walk to Caleb Langager to load the bases. Fering scored on a ground out by Logan O’Hara.

W/BE’s lead did not last for long. Wells scored five runs in the home half of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead.

Wells added single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to increase their lead to 7-1.

Two more runs by the home team in the bottom of the fourth inning put Wells on top 9-1.

W/BE got their bats going in the top of the fifth inning and scored three runs to close the gap to 9-4 with Wells still in control.

Langager got things going in the fifth inning with a one-out single to left field. He moved to second base when Parker Meyers walked.

Langager and Meyers both scored on a triple by Logan O’Hara, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Allis.

Wells added two more runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 11-4 lead.

W/BE tallied four more runs in the top of the sixth inning before Wells ended their rally and claimed the 11-8 victory.

W/BE 9, Janesville 7

The Winnebago/Blue Earth Legion team took an early lead against Janesville and then had to withstand a late-inning rally to go home with a 9-7 victory on Monday, June 20.

After a scoreless first inning, W/BE scored four times in the top of the second inning.

Logan O’Hara led off the inning with a triple. After an infield pop out, Colton Hubly walked. With Abe Kokos batting, Hubly stole second base. Kokos then hit a sacrifice fly to score O’Hara and advance Hubly to third base.

A single by Carson Sturtz brought Hubly home with the second run of the game.

Sturtz moved to second base on a wild pitch and Noah Johnson walked to put runners on first and second.

Both runners scored on a double by Soren Fering and W/BE led 4-0.

Parker Meyers was hit by a pitch to begin the top of the third inning. Singles by O’Hara and Nick Barke loaded the bases with zero outs.

Meyers scored on a wild pitch and Hubly walked to fill the bases again. A single by Sturtz plated O’Hara with W/BE’s sixth run of the game.

Janesville got on the board with one run in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 6-1 ballgame with W/BE on top.

Both teams scored in the fourth inning. W/BE added one run in the top of the inning before Janesville struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-4 in favor of W/BE.

A double by Fering in the top of the fifth inning drove in the fleet-footed Johnson who had opened the inning with a walk. Fering would later come around to score on a single by Barke to extend W/BE’s lead to 9-4.

Janesville rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but W/BE’s pitcher, Jimmy Allis, shut the door in the seventh inning to preserve the 9-7 victory for W/BE.

O’Hara led W/BE’s 10-hit attack with four hits, including a double and a triple.

Fering, Barke and Sturtz each had two hits. Fering drove in three runs while Sturtz drove in two.

Taylor Davids and Jimmy Allis split pitching duties for W/BE. Davids threw four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven batters.

Allis came on to relieve Davids in the bottom of the fifth inning. He was credited with three innings of work and allowed three runs on four hits while walking one batter and striking out seven.
