Waterville gets by Blue Earth 6-2

By Kevin Mertens - Staff Writer | Jul 3, 2022

Brandyn Olsen (3) is congratulated by his teammates after hitting a home run in the first inning of the Pirates’ game against Waterville on June 29.

The Waterville Indians took advantage of miscues by the Blue Earth Pirates and left Veterans Field with a 6-2 victory on Wednesday evening, June 29.

Gusty winds made fielding pop flies interesting. High pop ups which looked like they might be caught near third base ended up falling closer to second base.

The Indians opened the game with a single and then used a sacrifice bunt to the runner to second base.

Blue Earth then misplayed a pop fly to put runners on first and second base and a walk filled the bases.

A sacrifice fly to right field brought home the first run of the game and allowed Waterville’s runner on second base to advance to third.

The runner at first stole second base and both runners scored a single to the outfield to give Waterville a 3-0 lead.

Blue Earth scored once in the bottom of the first inning when Brandyn Olsen hit a fly ball that cleared the center-field wall for a home run to cut Waterville’s lead to 3-1.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fourth inning when the Pirates committed two errors which allowed the Indians to score another run to go on top 4-1.

Waterville tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning. After their leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, an infield error put runners at first and third base. A single brought home the runner from third to increase the Indians’ lead to 5-1.

The Pirates scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the gap to 5-2.

Cody Sukalski led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a wild pitch. TJ Stallman walked to put runners on first and second base. Both runners moved up a base when Waterville’s pitcher unleashed another wild pitch.

Sukalski scored when Olsen grounded into a fielder’s choice. After eight complete innings, the Indians led the Pirates 5-2.

Waterville added one more run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 6-2.

Lee Hodges pitched the complete game for the Pirates. He allowed six runs, two earned, on 12 hits while walking four batters and striking out nine.

The Pirates only had six hits. In addition to Olsen’s homer, Kaylen Legred had two singles while Hunter Bleess, Ryan Madetzke and Tanner Nawrocki each had one.

Blue Earth committed five errors while Waterville had two.

The Pirates left eight men on base while the Indians stranded 12 base runners.

Morristown 9, Blue Earth 3

The Morristown Morries scored five runs in the first inning, one run in the second and three in the third inning on their way to a 9-3 victory over the Blue Earth Pirates. The game was played at Veterans Field in Blue Earth on June 26.

Blue Earth scored single runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings to account for their runs.

Blue Earth 14, Janesville 4

The Blue Earth Pirates and Janesville Jays met in Mankato on June 22 and the Pirates came away with a 14-4 victory.

Blue Earth scored two runs in the top of the first when Kane Malo singled and Brandyn Olsen hit a home run.

Janesville put one run on the board in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1 in favor of Blue Earth after one inning.

The Pirates scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-1 lead with the Jays coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Janesville was able to score twice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Each team scored once in the sixth inning to make the score 11-4 after six complete innings.

Blue Earth added three runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete the scoring.

The Pirates had 18 hits in the contest and were led by Logan O’Hara with four. Malo, Olsen, and Kaylen Legred each had three hits while TJ Stallman added two.

Malo, TJ Stallman, Olsen and Zach Shonrock each had two RBI.

Gavin Storbeck picked up the win. He threw six innings and allowed four runs, three earned while walking six batters and striking out seven. Schonrock pitched two innings and Legred pitched the final inning with neither pitcher allowing a run.

The Pirates will travel to Minnesota Lake on Wednesday, July 6, to take on the Royals. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
