The baseball season came to an end for the Winnebago/Blue Earth American Legion baseball team when they suffered two losses at the Legion Sub-State Tournament on July 14 and 15 in St. James.

Windom 6, W/BE 3

Windom’s Legion team handed Winnebago/Blue Earth a 6-3 defeat to give W/BE their second loss and knock them out of the Sub-State playoffs. The game was played on Friday, July 15.

W/BE trailed Windom 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning after Windom scored once in the top of the second inning and twice in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Caleb Langager worked his way on base with a one-out walk and advanced to third base on a single by Parker Meyers. An error on a pickoff attempt of Meyers allowed Langager to scoot home with a run for W/BE and cut Windom’s lead to 3-1.

Windom maintained their two-run lead through the next two innings before adding three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to up their lead to 6-1.

Meyers doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for W/BE. An infield single by Logan O’Hara put runners at the corners with zero outs.

Meyers scored and O’Hara was forced out at second base when Nick Barke hit a grounder to the shortstop for a fielder’s choice.

After a fly out, Abram Kokos hit a single to center field to move Barke to second base. Barke scored W/BE’s final run of the game when Carson Sturtz lined a double to center field.

W/BE totaled five hits in the game. Meyers had two of the hits including a double.

O’Hara pitched the first five innings and gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits. He walked seven batters and struck out three.

Soren Fering hurled the last two innings and was charged with three runs, one earned, while giving up four hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out one batter.

Springfield 11, W/BE 1

Winnebago/Blue Earth found themselves trailing 7-1 after three innings and were unable to recover. W/BE fell to Springfield in the first round of the Sub-State Legion Tournament 11-1, in five innings.

Springfield, the champions of Sub-District B, took advantage of numerous W/BE errors and scored at least one run in every inning of the contest.

W/BE had six hits to Springfield’s nine.

W/BE’s lone run came in the top of the second inning on consecutive singles by Logan O’Hara, Nick Barke and Abram Kokos. Unfortunately for W/BE, Springfield turned a double play to get out of the inning without any further damage.
