For the first time this season, the Blue Earth Area girls’ cross country team was able to field a complete team when they competed at the Grizzly Pie Invite which was held at Prairie Ridge Golf Course near Janesville.

The meet, held on Sept. 29, gives out pies and cookies instead of medals and trophies to the top performers. The top five individual finishers in each race are awarded pies and the rest of the top 15 finishers receive a cookie.

The Buccaneer girls ran to a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meter varsity race with two runners placing in the top 15.

Maple River finished in first place with 53 points. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton also had 53 points but was awarded second place because the top Maple River runner finished ahead of the top WEM/JWP runner. Blooming Prairie was third with 81. BEA had 93 for fourth place. United South Central took fifth with 100 points and Medford was sixth with 103.

Rounding out the varsity scores for the Bucs were Leah Becker with a time of 30:31 and a 31st place finish and Mya Steinhauer who finished 35th in 32:34.

“Lola and Leah both ran hard and achieved their best times of the season,” Koenig explained. “This was Mya’s first race in two years so it was good to see her out there competing.”
