USC falls to ML/GHEC/T in volleyball

Molly Wegner receives a serve and passes the ball to the setter to begin the offensive attack. The Rebels lost 3-2 to Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman in the opening game of the Section 2A playoffs last Tuesday.
The No. 8-seeded United South Central Rebels volley ball team hosted the No. 9-seeded Jaguars of Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman last Monday night, Oct. 24, in the opening round of the Section 2A Volleyball Tournament.
And, while the Rebels were able to build up a 2-1 lead, it was the Jaguars who came away with the 3-2 win and the opportunity to advance in the tournament.
The set scores were 18-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-17, 15-11.
“This was a tough loss to swallow, but you have to credit ML/GHEC/T for making the plays when they needed to in order to win a pressure-packed match,” Rebels coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “I thought our kids battled and put themselves in a position to win, we just couldn’t get the job done when it counted. When we passed the ball in serve receive, we had success all night, that just went away at points in sets two and four which made us much easier to defend.”
Kendal Harpestad and Kiera Schultz led the Rebels with 10 kills apiece. Harpestad also had 17 digs and two aces, while Schultz had eight digs, three blocks and three aces.
Madison Passer and Chloe Lutteke each had eight kills. Lutteke also had five digs, two blocks and two aces, while Passer had two digs.
Mariah Anderson had two kills and three digs and Eleny Korn had 33 assists, three digs and two aces.
“Anytime you’re on the losing end to finish a season, it’s disappointing, but I want to thank our seniors (Ally, Jade, Paige, and Molly) for the dynamic they’ve provided our team all season long,” the coach added. “They’ve been a fun group to have over the years and we’ll certainly miss them next fall.”
ML/GHEC/T advanced to take on No. 1 Cleveland at Cleveland High School on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in the South Sub-Section 2A Quarterfinals.
The USC Rebels ended their season with a 6-21 record, 0-11 in the Gopher Conference.
