Ten Longhorns place at PEM Invite

The Longhorns’ Chad Shull scores two points after getting a takedown against the Bucs’ Blair Lunz when the two teams met in a dual meet on Tues. Jan. 17. Shull went on to win the match 10-2.

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns had 10 of their wrestlers place in the top six at the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.

The Longhorns had one wrestler take the championship trophy home.

Byron Getchell took first place when he defeated Zack Keller of Lake City 5-1 in the championship match at 160 pounds. Getchell had a bye in the first round and in the quarterfinals, then won by a fall in the semifinals.

Four MR/USC wrestlers claimed second place.

At 126 pounds, Isaiah Gonzalez ended up second when he lost a close 3-0 contest to Nate Evans of Lake City. Gonzalez had defeated Henry Cushman of Wabasha-Kellogg 5-3 to get to the final match.

At 138 pounds, Braxton Simon lost a 10-0 major decision to Logan Henningson of Windom-Mountain Lake in the championship match. Simon had advanced to the final match with a 9-1 major decision.

At 182 pounds, Cooper Ochsendorf placed second when he lost a 7-4 decision to Jake Borman of St. Thomas Academy. Ochsendorf had gained the championship match with a 12-4 major decision over Alexander Bedsted of Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

At 220 pounds, Dizel Butler lost 3-0 to Noah Penigar of Eau Claire North in the championship match and took second. He had a 10-5 decision over Dominik Hoffman of Lake City in the semi-finals to get to the final match.

Two MR/USC wrestlers ended in fourth place when they lost the third place match.

At 106 pounds, Noah Gonzalez lost by a fall to Justus Mueller of La Crosse Logan/Cent. in the battle for third. Gonzalez had a bye in the first round, won by a fall in the quarterfinals, lost by a fall in the semi-finals and won a 5-1 decision in the consolation semis to gain his entrance to the third place match.

At 113 pounds, Wyatt Walters also lost in the third place match by a fall, to Donovan Yang of La Crosse Logan/Cent. Walters had a bye in the first round, won by a fall in the quarterfinals, lost by a fall in the semifinals and won a 6-5 decision in the consolation semis to get to the third place match.

Two Longhorn wrestlers took fifth place by winning the fifth place match.

At 145 pounds Garrett Bollman won fifth place when his opponent, Titan Tekautz of Lewiston-Altura-Rushford-Peterson, withdrew due to injury. Bollmann had a bye in the first round, lost in the quarterfinals, had a bye in the consolation round 2, won 5-2 in consolation round 3 and lost 8-4 in the consolation semis.

At 152 pounds, Chad Shull took fifth with a pin over Levi Tryggestad of La Crosse Logan/Cent. Shull had a bye in the first round, lost by a fall in the quarterfinals, had a bye in consolation round 2 and won a 12-2 major decision in consolation round 3, then lost by a fall in the consolation semis.

At 120 pounds, Brayden Mithun ended in sixth place when he lost a 15-0 technical fall to Henry Dohnalik in the match for fifth place.

MR/USC 54, Triton 21

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns had little trouble with the Triton Cobras on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, on their way to a 54-21 victory.

MR/USC had four straight wins – all by forfeit – before Triton got on the scoreboard.

Noah Gonzalez at 106 pounds, Wyatt Walters at 113, Brayden Mithun at 120 and Isaiah Gonzalez at 126 all won by forfeits for a 24-0 start to the match.

The Cobras’ Hunter Garness got a pin over Kolt Bullerman at 132 pounds, but the Longhorns took the next three bouts.

Braxton Simon took a win by a pin over Guadalupe Martinez at 138 pounds, Garrett Bollmann won by forfeit at 145 and Chad Shull won by pin over Brayden Srohwer at 152, and the score was 42-6.

MR/USC’s Byron Getchell lost 6-4 to Owen Garness at 160 pounds and Tyler Hollerich lost by a fall to Liam Schlichting at 170.

Then Cooper Ochsendorf won by forfeit at 182 pounds and there was a double forfeit at 195.

The Longhorns’ Max Fuller lost by a fall at 220 pounds to Christian Schrom, but Dizel Butler of MR/USC won by a fall over John Moening at 285.

That made the final score 54-21.
