Wrestlers go 1-2 at Plum Creek Duals

Defeat Worthington 45-24, but lose to Adrian and TMBWWG

The Blue Earth Area wrestling team was in action at the Plum Creek Duals held at Tracy on Jan. 20. The Bucs went 1-2 with a victory over Worthington and losses to Adrian and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

BEA 45, Worthington 24

The Blue Earth Area Bucs and Worthington Trojans were locked in a tight battle in the early stages of the contest but the Bucs pulled away for a 45-23 victory by winning five of the last seven matches.

Saul Mendoza got the Trojans on the board with a third-period pin of Timmy Nagel at 106 pounds.

BEA’s Colton Tolzman won by a forfeit at 113 pounds to even the score at 6-6.

Worthington’s Dalton Larson pinned Drake Engelby at 120 pounds to put the Trojans back on top 12-6.

In the 126-pound match, BEA’s Carson Sturtz won by a decision over Oscar Galvez to cut Worthington’s lead to 12-9.

The Bucs’ Logan Shelstad won by forfeit at 132 pounds to give the Maroon and Gold their first lead of the night at 15-12.

Cooper Peterson kept the Bucs’ win streak going when he pinned Moo Bleh in 1:06 in the 138-pound match. BEA’s lead increased to 21-12.

The Trojans’s Ethan Meyer won by a fall over Will Weerts at 145 pounds to narrow the Bucs’ lead to 21-18.

Blair Lunz earned three team points for BEA with a hard-fought 10-8 decision over Levi Hennings at 152 pounds to make the score 24-18 with the Bucs on top.

Kade Gaydon pinned Josiah Banegas with two seconds left in the first period of the 160-pound match to increase the BEA lead to 30-18.

There was a double forfeit in the 170-pound match with no team points awarded.

At 182 pounds, Parker Meyers had two takedowns to record a 4-0 victory over Evan Neuberger and extend the Bucs’ advantage to 33-18.

The Trojans’ Mason Schutz won by a fall over John Lappe at 195 pounds to narrow BEA’s lead to 33-24.

BEA’s Cory Kitchel put the match out of reach when he pinned Dylan Sholes in 51 seconds in the 220-pound contest. Kitchel’s triumph gave the Bucs a 39-24 lead with one match remaining.

Zach Benson recorded BEA’s final victory when he pinned Kasey Gerhard with three seconds left in the first period of the 285-pound match to make the final score 45-24 in favor of the Bucs.

Adrian 60, BEA 22

The Adrian Dragons won nine of the 14 matches on their way to a 60-22 triumph over BEA.

The Bucs lost the first three matches at 106, 113 and 120 pounds by falls before Carson Sturtz received a forfeit at 126 pounds to make the team score 18-6 in Adrian’s favor.

After Adrian won by a pin at 132 pounds, BEA’s Cooper Peterson won by a 13-4 major decision over Jackson Jenniges at 138 pounds. Adrian’s lead now stood at 24-10.

Adrian collected two more pins at 145 and 152 pounds to extend their lead to 36-10.

Kade Gaydon tallied six team points for the Bucs when he won by a fall in 3:14 over Breyer Hieronimus in the 160-pound match.

Parker Meyers made it two in a row for BEA with his first-period pin in 1:38 over Micah Bullerman at 172 pounds. The win by Meyers cut Adrian’s lead to 36-22.

However, Adrian won the final four matches with a forfeit at 182 pounds and pins at 195, 220 and 285 pounds to complete their 60-22 triumph over BEA.

TMBWWG 51, BEA 28

BEA’s Timmy Nagel got his team off to a good start when he pinned Logan Petersen in the 106-pound match with 12 seconds to go in the final period, but the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove Panthers recovered and went on to defeat the Bucs 51-28.

Drake Engelby picked up the second win for BEA with his pin of Nolan Verlinde in 2:54 at 120 pounds.

Also winning for BEA were Cooper Peterson at 138 pounds with a pin of Damian Alatriste. Peterson’s pin was at the 3:19 mark.

At 160 pounds, the Bucs’ Kade Gaydon pinned Ashton Squires in 3.35.

In the 170-pound match, Parker Meyers topped Gage Struchen 11-0 to win by a major decision.
