Bluejays squeak by Buccaneers 37-34

The Waseca Bluejays rallied to defeat the host Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in wrestling 37-34 on Thursday night, Feb. 2.
The Bucs’ Aiden Mutschler received a forfeit at 106 pounds and Timmy Nagel, who moved up one weight bracket to wrestle at 113, pinned Elijah Biehn to put BEA on top 12-0.
Waseca’s Jacob Knutson earned a fall against Drake Engelby at 120 pounds to cut the Bucs’ lead to 12-6.
Carson Sturtz increased BEA’s lead to 18-6 with his pin of Peyton Somers at 126 pounds.
Kellen Klinger of the Bluejays was able to pin Will Weerts at 132 pounds and his teammate Slade Barnett earned a 9-0 major decision over Angel Martinez at 138 to make the score 18-16 in the Bucs’ favor.
At 145 pounds, BEA’s Cooper Peterson scored a 15-0 technical fall over Jacob Root followed by a Waseca forfeit to Blair Lunz at 152 pounds to put the Bucs on top 29-16.
Waseca won by a forfeit at 160 pounds and by a decision at 170 pounds when Christian Rodriguez got by BEA’s Kade Gaydon 7-4. The Bucs’ lead was now 29-25.
At 182 pounds, Parker Meyers earned five team points for the Maroon and Gold when he won by a 15-0 technical fall over Carter Ellis to stretch BEA’s lead to 34-25.
The Bucs gave up a forfeit at 195 pounds and their lead was now 34-31.
Waseca’s Matthew Veroeven won a hard-fought 6-4 decision over Cory Kitchel at 220 pounds to knot the score at 34-34.
In the 285-pound match, Waseca’s JD Delgado won a close 5-3 decision over Zach Benson to give the Bluejays the 37-34 win.
Sibley East Duals
The Buccaneer wrestling team picked up two wins at the Sibley East Duals on Saturday, Jan. 28.
BEA 42, Sibley East 27
Blue Earth Area won five out of the last seven matches against the Sibley East Wolverines to pocket a 42-27 victory.
Timmy Nagel’s pin of Gage Horstman in 2:08 in the 106-pound match gave the Bucs an early 6-0 lead.
The Wolverines’ Tanner Johnson won by a pin over Colton Tolzmann at 113 pounds to even the score at 6-6.
Sibley East took a 12-6 lead when Benito Diaz scored a first-period pin over Drake Engelby at 120 pounds.
The Wolverines made it 15-6 when Josh Sotelo defeated BEA’s Carson Sturtz 9-4 in the 126-pound match.
The Bucs’ Angel Martinez at 132 pounds and Cooper Peterson at 138 pounds each won by falls to give BEA an 18-15 lead.
The Wolverines regained the lead by a 21-18 score when the 145-pound match was won by Atley Strack with a first-period pin over BEA’s Will Weerts.
At 152 pounds, the Bucs’ Blair Lunz pinned Owen Utendorfer to help the Maroon and Gold go back on top 24-21.
BEA’s Kade Gaydon extended his team’s lead to 27-21 with his 5-4 decision over Jathan Mendoza in the 160-pound match.
The Bucs increased their lead to 33-21 when Parker Meyers received a forfeit at 170 pounds.
There was a double forfeit at 182 pounds with no team points awarded.
It took just 38 seconds for BEA’s 195-pounder Cory Kitchel to put Gianny Lopez’s shoulders to the mat and extend the Bucs’ lead to 39-21.
The Wolverines received a forfeit at 220 pounds and BEA’s Zach Benson won by a 2-0 decision over Gabriel Godinez at 285 pounds to make the final score 42-27 in favor of the Bucs.
BEA 54, Trinity School 15
The Trinity School at River Ridge Tri-Hawks won the first three matches to take a 15-0 lead over the Buccaneers, but Blue Earth Area won the 12 remaining matches (there were two double forfeits) to triumph 54-15.
At 120 pounds, Carson Sturtz picked up BEA’s first win with a 33 second pin over Joseph Nicklaus.
Angel Martinez won by a fall in 4:23 over Thomas King in the 132-pound weight class.
Cooper Peterson made it three pins in a row when he won by a fall in 5:00 over Dominic McNamara at 138 pounds.
Will Weerts received a forfeit at 145 pounds which gave the Bucs a 24-15 lead.
At 152 pounds, Blair Lunz needed three minutes to win by a fall over Edmund Richardson.
Kade Gaydon, at 160 pounds, and Parker Meyers, at 170 pounds, each received forfeits.
There was a double forfeit at 182 and 220 pounds.
Cory Kitchel won at 195 pounds with a pin in 2:42 over Andrew Stone.
In the final match it was Zach Benson of the Bucs winning by a forfeit.
BEA 51, St. James 30
The Bucs opened the contest with four victories on their way to a 51-30 victory over their Big South Conference opponent, the St. James Saints.
BEA’s Timmy Nagel won by a pin at 106 pounds in 1:42 seconds over Beck Johnson to put the Bucs on top 6-0.
Colton Tolzman’s pin of Zachary Curry in 5:47 of the 113-pound match increased the Bucs’ lead to 12-0.
Drake Engelby made it 18-0 in BEA’s favor when he won his 120-pound match by pinning Arlene Melendez in 1:33.
Carson Sturtz received a forfeit at 126 pounds to extend the Bucs’ lead to 24-0.
St. James picked up six points when Kollin Anderson won by a fall over Logan Shelstad at 132 pounds.
BEA’s Angel Martinez won by a 7-3 decision over Talyn Tande at 138 pounds to make the score 27-6 in favor of the Bucs.
Cooper Peterson added six more points to the Bucs’ total with his pin against Dylan Reid in 4:23 of the 145-pound match.
The Saints picked up six more points when Levi Miest pinned Blair Lunz at 132 pounds but the Bucs still held a 33-12 lead.
Kade Gaydon made the score 39-12 when he won by a fall in 41 seconds over Hayden Davis at 160 pounds.
Parker Meyers’ second-period pin of Peyton Wolner at 170 pounds made the score 45-12 in favor of BEA.
The Saints received a forfeit at 182 pounds to cut the Bucs’ lead to 45-18.
Cory Kitchel scored the final six points for BEA when he pinned Jarret Durheim in 35 seconds in the 195-pound match.
St. James received a forfeit at 220 pounds and the Saints’ Willie Curry won by a pin over Zach Benson at 285 pounds to make the final score 51-30 with the Bucs picking up the victory.
