Longhorns defeat WEM/JWP Buccaneers 51-24 in dual meet

The Longhorns’ Noah Gonzalez battled Timmy Nagel of Blue Earth Area in a match earlier this season. Gonzalez has been the 106-pound wrestler for MR/USC this season.

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns wrestling team traveled to Rochester on Saturday, Jan. 28, to compete at the Rochester Century Panther Invitational Wrestling Meet.

The Longhorns had one member of the team take the championship at his weight.

Byron Getchell, at 160 pounds, claimed first place when he took an exciting one point, 4-3, win over Orion Sass of Fillmore-Lanesboro in the first place match.

Getchell had defeated Jeremiah O’Reilly of Goodhue in the semifinal match at 160 by a score of 7-1.

MR/USC also had just one second place finisher.

Braxton Simon, at 138 pounds, lost the first place match by a fall to Jackson Marr of Forest Lake.

Simon had gotten to the championship bout with an 8-1 decision over Payton Hoist in the semifinals round.

The Longhorns had two wrestlers claim third place at the invitational.

MR/USC’s 113-pounder, Wyatt Walters, won by a fall at 1:02 over Lucas Ericson of Goodhue in the third place match.

Walters had won his quarterfinals match with a pin, then lost in the semifinals by a 10-5 score. He came back and won his consolation semifinals match, 5-0, over Quade Mullenback of Stewartville to gain a spot in the third place match.

Cooper Ochsendorf also took third place at this weight class, 182 pounds. He won a 9-5 decision over Jack Carlson of Goodhue to claim third place.

Ochsendorf had won his quarterfinals match by a 18-2 technical fall, then had lost in the semifinals to Evan McGuire by an 8-4 decision. In the consolation semifinals he defeated Cole Sass of Fillmore-Lanesboro by an 11-0 major decision to win his way to the third place match.

The Longhorns had one fourth place finisher. Noah Gonzalez, at 106 pounds, lost by a fall to Carson Wright of Ellsworth in the third place match.

Gonzalez had won a 4-3 decision in the quarterfinals, lost by a fall in the semifinals, then won a 9-0 major decision over Mason Teal of Rochester Century to get to the third place match.

Two MR/USC wrestlers took fifth place ­- Brayden Mithun at 120 pounds and Isaiah Gonzalez at 126 pounds.

Mithun won his fifth place match with a pin of Gabrien Callies of Rochester Century. He had lost his quarterfinals match, won his consolation round match, then lost in the consolation semifinals round which put him in the 120 pound fifth place match.

Gonzalez won his fifth place match against Elijah Schei of Stewartville with a no contest determination.

He had won his quarterfinals match with a pin, lost by a pin in the semifinals, lost 7-3 in the consolation semifinals, which placed him in the 126 pound fifth place match.

Two MR/USC wrestlers ended in sixth place when they lost their fifth place matches.

Kolt Bullerman lost by a fall to Ayden Ripplinger of Burnsville in the 132 pound fifth place match.

At 145 pounds, Garrett Bollmann lost 4-2 in sudden victory (overtime) to Michael Nail of Rochester Century in the fifth place match.

MR/USC 51, WEM/JWP 24

The Maple River/United South Central Longhorns more than doubled the score of their opponents, Waterville-Elysian-Morris- town/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, during their match on Thursday, Jan. 26.

MR/USC won the match 51-24 over WEM/JWP.

The Longhorns started off the match behind 6-0, when Noah Gonzalez lost by a fall to Brady Murphy at 106 pounds.

However, MR/USC won the next six matches to go up 33-6.

The Longhorns’ Wyatt Walters won by a fall over Charles Adams at 113 pounds, Brayden Mithun won by a fall over Carson James at 120, Isaiah Gonzalez won by forfeit at 126, Kolt Bullerman won by a fall over Jaxon Julsing at 132, Garrett Bollmann won a 13-6 decision over Kelton Erier at 138 and Braxton Simon won by a fall over Ben Root at 145.

MR/USC’s Gavin Bird lost by a pin to Lucas Morsching at 152 pounds, making the score 33-12, but then the Longhorns won the next three matches to go up 48-12.

At 160 pounds Chad Shull of MR/USC won by a fall over Patrick Adams, as did Byron Getchell at 170 over Zach Quast. Cooper Ochsendorf won a close 3-2 decision over Jack Cahill at 182.

Longhorn Max Fuller lost by a fall at 195 pounds to Avery Fall and MR/USC forfeited at 220, which made the score 48-24.

The Longhorns got three more points when Dizel Butler took a 3-1 decision over Max Davis at 285 pounds, making the final 51-24.
